Star Trek In-show music dull bland and generic

Im not referring to Jerry Goldsmith's scores. Im rather partial in fact to the actual score. All the music that takes place as part of the action bores mehowever. Im talking about the jazz bands, Bajoran flautists, string quartets and so on and so forth.

Centuries in the future are we to believe that all music is totally diatonic? How is it that there is no chromaticism (think the planet of the ape's score where the harmonies are jarring and dont follow the rules of Major Minor weve become accustomed to). I loved some of TNG's Mozart Quartets but one would think that the man in charge of the musical examples would try and produce some more experimental examples.

The example of Vulcan music played in DS9 Season 1 episode 8 (Melora I think) when Melora and Jadzia are in the shuttle is a great case in point. It sounds like one of the directors sat down at a keyboard and worked something out. It doesnt sound like the greatest music of a "Noble and ancient race"

Gerald Fried always used chromatic progressions... including in Trek soundtracks.

Is that the background music or the actual in show music which is part of the action itself i.e. played by actors on stereos or as part of a visible orchestra or solo performance
