why do people always get so happy when the prize on a gameshow is a new car?

I'd love to have me a new car right now. I'd sell the old one and make money to pay the rent, internet bill, and maybe go out to a restaurant or two.

They're not so excited later, when they realize they have to pay the taxes on it themselves. Those "free cars" can end up costing you a couple grand.

Cars are

They audition people for those shows -- they want the most 'expressive' jumping-up-and-down, excited-looking people they can get.

Don't forget the insurance price increase, the older, worthless and safer the old car is the worse the increase will be.

It's more about the monetary value of the car than practicality, depending on what car it is.

Sometimes there is a catch and they find out after its actually a lease they won, they can pay to drive the car then have to give it back in 2-5 years. I feel sorry for those people, I wonder how excited they are in the end.

Every "winner" has the option to turn down the prize and avoid the tax liability...IIRC.

Sell it, give it away to someone they care about or learn to drive.
