Before the late 1990s different regions of Britain had their own separate ITV companies with different idents, graphics, startups, musical jingles, and local news. They are now archived on the TV ARK website under ITV Regional Television.

Which ITV company do you think had the best graphics and sound?

There were a lot. I loved the Central music from the early-80s.

There was lots of diversity in styles that was all killed off by the bland homogeneity of ITV since the Carlton and Granada takeovers of the late 1990s. The modern ITV graphics and jingles are not as bold or as brassy as many of those from the old companies. The Thames jingle with the reflection of London in the river is generally regarded as a classic but it was well known nationally. There are some oddities like the Ulster 'oscilloscope' screen and the abstract art of the TSW logo that takes a bit of thinking to work out what it is that were rarely seen outside of their broadcasting areas because they didn't network many programmes. The new style TVS material like the spinning trident and TVS logo is very striking. I think that Granada graphics are a bit dull for such a large and prominent ITV company.

Also, I'm not British. But what do you think about broadcast graphics and music over here in the states?

I'm not familiar with American TV channels apart from a few shown on satellite in Britain like Discovery and National Geographic. Much of the material on TV ARK is before my time or I never saw it when it was being broadcast.
