Just saw the movie...thought it was terrific...homage to 1920s Hollywood cinema. No wonder its up for 10 oscars.

I hope this is the start of a long line of silent films as brilliant and as well-crafted as The Artist was.

an obligatory minority opinion here- i found the flat gray palette hard on my eyes, as in eye strain. more contrast/sharpness would've been welcome, even if it violated some artistic rule or another.

Along with Hugo, this was my favorite film of last year and is currently the one I'm rooting for in the Best Picture race. I like old silent films, but I never thought that anyone would ever have the guts to do a serious one (looking at you, Mel Brooks) in modern times. Thankfully, I was proven wrong. And even though Hazanavicius's OSS films were hit or miss, major props to him for doing what almost no Hollywood director or producer is willing to do in this day and age: take a risky concept and run with it.

I have not seen The Artist yet, and I agree with you LP.

I liked it better than I thought. There is a scene where the main male character has a dream in which there is suddenly sound and he can hear the sound effects in the movie. That was pretty funny!
