I was watching a rerun of The Middle this week and the Dad "Mike" and the son "Bric" were both trying to be more social (they both tend to be reclusive) at a family picnic. The Dad was trying to empthasize with a married woman and she thought he was interested in an affair. The son tried to befriend a bully and the bully kept hitting him in the stomach. The lesson they learned was that like it or not, they were who they were and it was best to just be themselves even if they were reclusive. The actor who plays Bric also has a strange tic; if he says a word he likes the sound of he will bend his head down and whisper the word again. The oldest son is also away in college and was failing and seeked out the help of Bric (10-11 yo kid) to be his tutor because he realizes Bric is a "brainiac" Both Mike and Bric exhibit so many signs of HFA/AS is why I really like this show. Does anyone else feel this way or am I just reading too much into the show?

I think a lot of TV characters show signs of being on the spectrum;

Everybody loves Raymond; Both Raymond and his brother.
Seinfeld; George
Friends; Ross and Chandler
Big Bang Theory; take your pick
Two and a Half men; Jon Cryers character
Simpsons; Homer
Family Guy; Peter
etc.
etc.
etc.

I think it's because 1. writers are AS and write from their own experience as being a father/husband/view of the world or/and 2. writers use "a weird someone they know" as the basis for a character.

I definitely think Brick has AS. Mike, I think he's just not that social.

I love Bric's character, it's never been clearly stated whether he has AS or not, but in one season he was in a special class where he was "the most normal one"; on the Halloween episode the mom got stuck with taking the whole class trick' or' treating. The whole setup of the show is that on top of being a poor family, the parents are very busy and even a bit lazy at parenting, so they do the bare minimum and have never gotten around to getting him properly diagnosed.

Yes, The Middle is one of my favorite shows.

Bric is great - such a little Aspie. His nose seems always buried in a book, and if he misbehaves he is hard to punish because sending him to stay alone in his room is his idea of heaven.

One of my favorite scenes is when he likes a girl and invites her over to see his favorite fonts. :)
