Question about The Dark Knight Rises
It has been quite a long time since I've last seen the movie. I think I've seen it like 3 times but here's a question that was probably explained in the movie but I forgot.
Why did Bane and the League of Shadows want to destroy Gotham?
It made sense in Batman Begins because Ra's Al Ghul wanted to rid the city of crime and corruption, and to do it he would destroy the city. But in TDKR it was mentioned that organised crime was gone because of the Dent act so what point would there be for Bane to do all that?
Bane didn't want to destroy Gotham. He was loyal to Talia and it was Talia who wanted revenge on Batman/Bruce Wayne for the demise of her father Ra's al Ghul.
The method Talia and Bane chose was to destroy Gotham to get at Bruce Wayne/Batman. They knew he would do everything in his power to stop them but they initially outmaneuvered him both from the inside and outside.
The line Bane says the first time he fights Batman says a lot about his and Talia's motivation. This is the line where he states he wonders which would break first, Batman's mind or body. This indicates Bane knew that his actions would do one, the other, or both and it was mere curiosity he would make a distinction.
In the end it proved to temporarily be both which broke but both were fixed if not outright healed(batman has a lot of baggage). Batman came out stronger and was able to put an end to Talia and Bane.

Overt crime and corruption was gone, but Gotham was still a very corrupt and unjust city thanks to income/wealth/class inequality. If not, the city would have been largely immune to Bane/LoS's tactics.
Remember, the story was inspired partly by A Tale of Two Cities and is meant to serve as a cautionary tale.
It is sad that the Dickensian stuff is lost on so many these days.

No, he totally wanted to destroy Gotham, he specifically said that to Bruce once he imprisoned him, and due to Talia it was all a revenge motive, and he just messed with everyone's head by telling them they would "liberate" themselves.

Yes... Did I not say in my words what you said with yours?
I'm confused. Did I make a grammar error or leave a word out?
