Looking for films about everyday people and their trials and tribulations preferably with innovative storytelling and directing as well as powerful acting. Dramas preferred.

Lol i'll never ever understand the polarised American political system. I constantly hear Americans throwing the terms Republican and Democrat as if they're spitting some sort of hateful curse at their opponent lololol If its anything like the system in England really the differences in policy are just cosmetic. Certainly in theory theyre different but in practise most political decisions are made outside of the conservative Labour Republican Democrat dichotomy.

Amazing suggestions but I really meant dramas following families and people living out addiction,divorce,adultery,betrayal guilt and so on. American Beauty is perfect.

Hereafter: One of my favorites, that basically follows the lives of three people whose lives have been impacted in some way by death. There is one particular scene in the movie that I personally relate to more than anything else I've watched.

I second the "Great Gatsby" suggestion, it was a really good movie adaptation even though it may not be quite as "average" as you are looking for.

The Hours: I haven't seen it myself, but it's on my to-do list and I hear it's really good.

David Copperfield: There is a 1999 BBC adaptation of the novel that is, simply put, amazing. If you're unfamiliar with the story, it basically follows the humble life of a boy in England through the struggles and triumphs of his childhood, adolescence, and adult life. It has the distinction of being both the happiest and the saddest story I've read.

Julianne Moore and Streep are electric in the Hours. Amazing film I agree!! !
