Got to see why Whiplash has a 96% rating on rotten tomatoes.com the other night & I noticed that the lead character was very shy around a girl he likes (looking at the floor), was portrayed to be a little socially awkward with his blunt statements, tended to avoid eye contact, and was intensely focused on his thing - jazz drumming - to the point of special interest obsessive in order to become really good at it.

I haven't googled to find out if there's any chatter about this online, but I kind of think it was all intentional so as to portray him as someone with mild ASD traits.

Also, if you've never heard of it.. there is a reason it's rate so highly & it's very intense for a movie about a jazz drummer.
