Dr Who and the Daleks (1965)

Peter Cushing plays The Doctor as an elderly eccentric inventor who's built the Tardis in his spare time, not some 'Time Lord' from Gallifrey. This may seem odd to modern followers of the show, but William Hartnell, who played the Doctor on TV at the time, was also a doddery old grandfather figure.

Also stars Jennie Linden, who ambles around the set looking quite presentable in her mid-1960s beehive hairdo. The only real problem with the film is the character played by Roy Castle, who seems to be there to provide half-witted and completely unnecessary 'comic relief'.

The story itself is a bit pedestrian and predictable, but perfectly watchable.

The Cameraman

A funny silent film starring Buster Keaton that kept me & my family entertained.

Keaton sure was a comedic genius just like his UK counterpart Charlie Chaplin.

Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 (1966)

The sequel to the previous year's Dr Who And The Daleks. It follows a similar formula, with Peter Cushing as The Doctor, and Jill Curzon replacing Jennie Linden as the female lead: she does even less than Linden though, and doesn't have the compensating factor of a beehive hairstyle. The Roy Castle role is assumed by Bernard Cribbins (don't ask), but he's less annoying than Castle and a bit more useful.

The plot is irredeemably daft, and gets worse as it progresses (the Daleks want to remove the earth's core and turn the planet into a gigantic spaceship.....), but the film has one or two striking moments, such as when a Dalek emerges dramatically from the River Thames to surprise Cushing & Co. The Welsh actor Philip Madoc also has a show-stopping cameo role as a double-dealing chancer, who gets his comeuppance from the evil dustbins before they in turn get theirs from Cushing and Cribbins.

6.75 out of 10

Thor: Love And Thunder.

Thor must save the gods from the God Butcher, and runs into his ex, who has become a female Thor. The Guardians of the Galaxy make an appearance. Lots of goofy fun.

"The Beyond" by Lucio Fulci. I love these weird Italian horror movies.
