When reading an article about Family Matters it mention "there neighbor with Asperger's Syndrome" I don't remember enough about Urkel except the whole geek and geek stigma AS has attached to it otherwise IMO I say NO! (I don't remember much of the show so I wouldn't know) Another is in Community they mention Abed having Asperger's so what are your thoughts on his character?

Thanks.

I never watched Family Matters very much, but I never thought that Steve Urkel was supposed to bear any resemblance to people in real life; he was just supposed to be funny because he was strange.

Can't say much for Urkel, but I knew Abed had AS from the first episode. He's my favorite because I can relate to him.

No I don't think Steve Urkel has AS.

I know this thread is over 5 years, old----but.....

YES, I DO think Urkel was an Aspie!! I mean----look-it----his whole "Did I do that?", came-about because he was so unaware of how what he said, sounded! Plus, he was shy, a nerd, socially inept----I know those things are all stereo-typical----but, it HAS to be a caricature, so that it "translates", IMO.

I watched the show quite a bit when I was younger. Steve Urkel is a stereotypical nerd, and many NT's think that's what all people on the spectrum really are. Urkel is incredibly klutzy, is lucky if he can walk through a room without breaking something, and severely annoys almost everyone around him (the one character on the show who was always nice to him is Carl Winslow's mother). He doesn't show a lot of empathy - that is, he doesn't usually "get" when people are annoyed or upset until they are screaming their head of at him. Even though he loves science he believes in God and even Santa Claus, even saying that you don't analyze miracles. His love interest, Laura, wouldn't give him the time of day, finding him too nerdy and annoying, but eventually in the series she grows to like him and even becomes attracted to him. Nearly all her other boyfriends were complete jerks or even worse. Other characters on the show had a few autistic traits, just not as extreme. Laura was the "smart kid" in her family and a real overachiever at school. One time she punished herself for doing something wrong and after going to her room one of the parents asked the other if she was raising herself and not them. But no one thinks she's an aspie. Waldo used to be the sidekick of a school bully but later became Eddie Winslow's friend. Waldo was very dumb and slow, but was an excellent cook. He was able to make spaghetti sauce that was like ketchup taste delicious and when he started working at a hot dog restaurant people who used to complain about the food started cleaning their plates. :)
