I had never seen the Mentalist before, but I saw the finale last night. I thought it was sweet, but I don't see the point in trying again to watch the whole series. Should I?

I gave up after the first episode - too contrived for my tastes, especially after having run a few psychic cons of my own.
Although it was mostly accurate in its depictions of those people who believed that the lead character had psychic abilities - mostly vapid fools who would likely believe anything they were told.
