Some of you in this forum might have saw this coming, especially if you were in the Power Rangers thread. So anyways instead of de-railing that thread with my liking of this old classic I figured I'd start a thread for it.

So anyways does anyone else remember this show and did you like it? what about the old live action movies?

Also, what do you think of the newer animated series they had or the new movie? I remember seeing a bit of one of the episodes of the newer cartoon(hell they may have even gotten rid of that, don't know as I haven't checked). But yeah it was like a mockery of the original so I decided to stick with the old and never even saw the newer movie that came out, as I figured it would not be based on the old ones.

A friend at school used to buy the early comics, weren't they very different to the TV show?

I have the first two seasons of the 25th anniversary dvd but that's it. I don't know why but they won't bring out any of the other seasons which are availible in the US. I also have the movies. The first one and the CGI one are good but the other two suck. Also I have the film Turtles Forever, which features both the turtles from the 80's show and the ones from the 2003 show, awesome.

My older brother hated the Ninja Turtles because of their "blatant commercialism", but I developed an interest in them even though they were supposed to be for boys. Actually, my brother hated everything back then.

Yeah, the old cartoons were pretty silly. But in a fun way, usually. I remember the Rat King, who was a homeless man living in the sewers with the ability to control rats, and believed they were superior creatures. He was a villain but later became more of an anti-hero who helps the Turtles. He called one of his rats Mickey, and when the Turtles were surprised at this, he said, "We all have our role models". And in another episode, or maybe the same one, I think April was bringing a pizza with peanut butter on it to them, but she runs into the Rat King, who wants the pizza. He asks if the peanut butter on it is crunchy or smooth. She tells him crunchy, which pleases him. Yep, pretty silly.

And then there was stuff that was just plain ridiculous, like Splinter defeating Shredder with "The Curl Lee Maneuver", where he slaps him around like The 3 Stooges, Splinter curing three of the turtles that got turned into big floating balloons with magical mothballs, and then there was Mr. Ogg... horrors.

I absolutely loved the old cartoon series and the 1990's movies. I watched the series every time it was on (I only had access to it on one channel), and I watched the first 3 movies over and over and over. I didn't like the 4th movie (an animated one), but I love the Turtles Forever movie and I like the 2014 version, although not as much as the original trilogy and Turtles Forever.

When the old movies finally made it to DVD, I got them and rewatched them, and I was as captivated now (a couple of years ago) as I was back in the 1990's. TMNT are just an awesome franchise!

I had two fave episodes of the cartoon series, "Michelangelo's birthday" and "Shredderville".
Since I don't have Nickelodeon I have only seen the few episodes of the new series that I own on DVD. They're nice although I had to get used to the new looks of the turtles. I preferred their old looks, they were so cute in the original series.

I had some of the old action figures and a few of their vehicles. When I say had them, I mean that they are now in a collection box (or two), just like they were then and still in my life. I saw them again just the other day when going trough those boxes in order to chuck out stuff I wasn't interested in anymore. Those boxes were left largely intact lol
I even have a couple of balloons that existed back in the day (obviously without gas and in flat condition in one of the boxes).

I also read the comics, both the so-called kiddie version and the ones for older readers.

I've been a 'TMNT' fan for the near entirety of my life, though it didn't really become a focus of mine until several years ago.

Above all else, I'm the biggest fan of the '87 cartoon series. Yes, it was unbelievably stupid and packed with enough animation errors to make 'Homestar Runner' look like Studio Ghibli, but there's an undeniably endearing quality about it that warms the cockles of my heart something fierce. I have a ton of '87 series merchandise; I even carry around a 'TMNT' wallet every day.

I've only seen a handful of episodes, but I really dislike the 2003 cartoon series. I didn't like the style, stories or voice acting, and the 'Turtles Forever' movie was outright insulting to anyone who liked the '87 series. I guess I just prefer a more light-hearted tone for the premise than a dark and gritty one. I actually *do* enjoy the current 2012 series; a few gripes here and there, sure, but conversely, I actually do like the style, stories and voice acting.

As far as the movies go, I like the 1990 and 1991 films just fine, even though I don't have the nostalgic connection to them I do with the cartoon series (I didn't see the movies until adulthood). 'Turtles in Time' was awful and I'll fight anyone who says it isn't the worst film in the franchise, even more so than the 2014 'TMNT' film, which I thought was just okay. I've seen enough of the straight-to-VHS 'TMNT' specials like "Turtle Christmas" and "Turtle Tunes" to know that Michael Bay is far, FAR from the worst thing to happen to the series. The 2007 CGI movie was fun, if not particularly spectacular.

I'm a bit ashamed to say that I've never read any of the comics, not even the original Eastman/Laird ones.

As a "weird" kid, I am always grateful for the Ninja Turtles for giving me an interest I could share with all the boys at school. How popular were the Turtles? Let's just say since the show came out in the late 80s, the amount of pizza places has increased at least 5 fold. I don't think that is a coincidence!

I've always wanted to have a pizza party where I try every single one of Michaelangelo's pizza toppings throughout all ten seasons of the '87 series. We're talking, like, "jelly bean and sausage", "peanut butter, avocado and pickles", "hot fudge and garlic", "marshmallow and asparagus"...I've seen a couple of videos of people trying them out (with very mixed results), but I'm adventurous enough to put my own taste buds on the line.

Today I was at the Dollarama and I bought a package of toy turtles that squirt water. No, they don't look like Squirtle from Pokemon, they look like a cheesy knock-off of the Ninja Turtles. They look more like real turtles, but they're dressed in full-bodied Ninja suits instead of just masks and belts. Two of them are wearing blue and purple suits like Leo and Don respectively, but the other two are wearing black and dark green. Anyway I thought they were kind of cool anyway so I bought them. They also had girly princess-themed turtles but I noticed in the packets of four two of each were the same colors which was kind of a rip-off. I might get them anyway so they can be the "girlfriends".

Even 'Turtles in Time'? I won't knock you if you genuinely enjoy it, to each their own, but I'm curious what you liked about it.

^ I liked it because I liked the story. I liked how they went traded places, and the legend of the turtles from ancient times (which could have been a preparation for another movie where the turtles went even further back in time, but that never happened, at least not yet).

To each their own, of course. My personal opinion is, if you're not looking at it through nostalgia goggles, 'Turtles III' is one of the lowest points of the franchise. If you like it, that's fine, but there are a few things which rub me the wrong way.

1. I won't criticize the overall story (the '87 cartoon had more than its fair share of stupid plots), but for all of the awesome characters and storylines from the comics and cartoons, it was kind of a cop-out to come up with a standalone time travel storyline which utilized none of them. Who are "Walker" and "Norinaga" and why are they the main villains? Where are Shredder and Krang? It felt like a totally unrelated movie that they just slapped the Turtles into. The Turtles are just intrinsically urban; I'd want to see them in Feudal Japan as much as I would want to see Batman or Spider-Man.

2. The Jim Henson Company didn't do the costumes for part III and it shows. They're not nearly as bad as the costumes seen in, say, the "Coming Out of Our Shells" tour or any of the direct-to-video live action specials, but they're certainly not very good. Splinter isn't even a full costume, he's half a puppet who's only seen from the waist-up. I dunno, I just found the costumes and animatronics distractingly bad...they remind me of 'The Garbage Pail Kids Movie', and anything that reminds me of that is not a good time.

3. There are considerably less fight scenes in part III than in the previous two and that makes the film feel so much slower. 'Turtles III' also succumbs to the tendency that most 'TMNT' media in the early-to-mid-'90s did, in making the Turtles goofier and more clown-like. The first movie was a little darker than the cartoons, the second one was more in line with the cartoons' sense of slapstick humor, but the third one was the most overtly juvenile, with some of the worst jokes of the series (I never needed to hear the Turtles yell "SCHWING!" at the sight of April's legs).

The first film was a lot of fun, one of the better kid-oriented action flicks of the early 1990s. The second was goofy, and like the weirder episodes of the '80s cartoon, fell kind of into the endearing "so bad it's good" territory. The third was just boring, with bad costumes and a plot which had nothing to do with TMNT. That's my take on it, at least.
