We're getting new Godzilla and Gamera movies this year, but Cloverfield will be getting a follow-up first: March 11, 2016. As with the 2008 film, the trailer came out of nowhere and tells us very little about the movie itself. Stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman. Check it out:

It is a spiritual sequel. Whoever coined that phrase?

Don't know. I wonder what they plan to do with this?

I've been doing a bit of digging and it's looking like "spiritual sequel" is right, that this will be a Halloween III type situation, using the name to present a vaguely similar but unrelated story. Some people claiming to have seen an early screening back when it had a different working title basically spoiled the whole thing, and if what they say is true, the film doesn't involve the giant monster scenario from Cloverfield at all.

Ah well. I'll still be getting those new Godzilla and Gamera movies sometime this year, and this movie does look good despite how much or how little it has to do with Cloverfield.

Is Cloverfield about a big monster, kind of like with Godzilla rampaging through a city?

Yeah, but shown entirely from the perspective of the people down on the street, so the monster's screen time adds up to maybe a minute.
