Restored Lost Horizon released today for 80th anniversary
I have waited years for the 4K-scan restoration of Frank Capra's 1937 budget-breaking Lost Horizon ( http://www.afi.com/members/catalog/Deta ... Movie=6322 ) starring Ronald Colman and Jane Wyatt. I have waited three months just to buy it in Blu-ray.
If you think you have watched Lost Horizon in its original presentation, but didn't attend the world premiere screening in San Francisco on March 2, 1937, you haven't really, truly watched it all. Immediately after the premiere, the film was re-edited by Columbia Pictures, and later by local cinema owners, who all wanted to squeeze in an extra screening every day.
As a result of the re-editing, restoration workers spent years tracking down all the missing footage; after which, they cleaned and blemished each frame of the finished film before scanning the final version in 4K resolution. But, not every scene survived. The soundtrack of a few scenes is supplemented with photographs from the actors rehearsing in the now-missing scenes.
If you are a classic-film lover, you will love this movie. It even influenced the Indiana Jones films ( http://www.theraider.net/information/in ... orizon.php ).
