I thought I'd say that bringing British TV personalities here is both a good and a bad thing. My theory as to why follows.
Circa 1958, a well-known British TV host appeared on American TV to promote a variety TV show he was hosting. This person is none other than current "Countdown" host Des O'Connor. He appeared on our version of "Concentration" hosted by a man by the name of Hugh Downs. He is a newsman that is about 85 years old and is probably in retirement right now. Not many people here know who Des is unless they have seen clips of "Countdown" online.
Then, Phil Gurin, an American TV producer, decided to bring "The Weakest Link" to America in primetime and make the payoff a $1,000,000 prize. Also, he decided to bring Anne Robinson here because he thought he couldn't have done anything better. I certainly agree with him. I don't think anyone hosts that show better than she does.
Then, in 2005, "Supernanny" with Jo Frost premiered on American television. I happen to think that Jo Frost is very nice, very smart and she always knows what she does. It takes a lot of courage to deal with kids who throw temper tantrums as major as they are. I commend her for dealing with them.
In June of 2005, one of the biggest failures in American TV aired. "Hit Me Baby One More Time" was Americanized. Yes, we brought Vernon Kay here to host it. He is now hosting "Family Fortunes" of course.
In 2006, we brought a very special person here to be the first host of the first show of the cell phone quiz show here in America. Her name is Mel Peachey. She is extremely happy-go-lucky, friendly and always willing to make every show that she hosts a lot of fun. I was shocked when I heard that none of you had ever heard of her, as she is on the Sky Network there and everyone gets that channel. Now, I hear that the cell phone quiz show craze is in serious jeopardy there because the media does not like the fact that the only purpose of those shows being on is because people want to make a lot of money. Mel is hosting "quiznation" on the Sky Network. Also, just so you all know, the cell phone quiz show craze is still going strong here. It's much more popular here than it is in England.
Finally, I have great news for all of you who like down-to-earth British ladies. Layla Kayleigh has been named host of the "World Poker Tour" when it comes back on for another season next year. She is another young lady from London. I happen to like her because she is very down-to-earth and professional.
In general, do you all think that bringing British TV personalities to America is a good idea?
