I agree wholeheartedly with Lauren Faust and Mitchell Kreigman. These two creators were fed up with what most children's entertainment looked like in the 1990's and 2000's. Terrible animation, horrible voice acting, lots of giggling. Three things that should never be a part of wonderful shows for kids. But before I ramble on about this, I want to express my feelings on something:
Barney and Friends. (I can see about 300 people clicking off just because of the mention of that name)
"Barney? Seriously Spencer? What's to discuss about that pile of Play-Doh?" Well let me tell you:
There is just so much wrong with this show it's ridiculous. First off, the concept. What kid would want to stay at school after hours just to play with some dinosaur toy that comes to life when you tell it to? I mean really! Second, whoever picked the voice actor out for Barney was either rushed or put little to no effort at all into this. The voice is one of the most important parts of the show and you have to have tryouts with different people. which this show obviously did not. Third, Barney is way worse than Goofy when he gets clumsy and falls on his tail. Why? Because unlike Goofy, Barney just throws a tantrum when he falls. He also jumps all around the place all the time and there is never any calm. Also, he is supposed to be a father figure for BJ and Baby Bop, and he can't even do that because he is too busy being just so happy about everything. He can't even discipline BJ and Baby Bop if, let's say. they try to go catch some sort of stinging insect (Yes. This ACTUALLY happened in one episode believe it or not). Fifth, the songs. His theme song is just Yankee Doodle Dandy with new lyrics (and so is that god awful one at the end......). None of the songs are original to be exact. And not to mention that he sings them so annoyingly and makes me want to beat my head against the wall.....
Anyway, back to what I mentioned at the very beginning of the post. Barney and Friends is supposed to teach kids how to get along, share, care, use their manners, stuff like that. Now as an adult, I can see why everyone HATES this show. Very few shows in the history of anything have tried to teach kids all that while still being entertaining enough for the parent. I can think of three - The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, and Bear in the Big Blue House (And maybe The Care Bears Family, but no one seems to remember the show) - that had a once in million years shot to entertain audiences both young and old and absolutely nailed it the first time around. Barney is supposedly about "friendship," but it won't ever be hit like the ones I mentioned above. Through original stories and songs and creating a "home away from home" of sorts that is very peaceful, Pooh, Twilight, and Bear have actually taught older audiences about what life is really all about. (But Pooh and the Ponies will always hold a special place in my heart.....they brought me out of a great depression I was going through one time, but I will make a post about that sometime in the future).
All in all, my sensory issues seem to be getting worse (sometimes better) as the years pass by, and there is only going to be so much I can handle. Barney and Friends is awful and you will want to hit your head against the wall after hearing "I Love You" for the 123, 345, 998, 234, 857, 900th time!! (Oh, and don't even get me started on those freaking freaky Teletubbies. Don't. EVEN )
I like Barney. Sure, the bad acting and obnoxious music gets annoying for adults, but the values were positive and using catchy songs helps kids to remember things.
When I was in elementary school, I wish I would’ve been taught a catchy song to remember the days of the week in the right order.
As a kid, I would’ve stayed after school to play with a fun and nurturing toy dinosaur who comes to life.
If I’m remembering correctly, actors who played the role of Barney didn’t stick with it for too long. The costume was hot, heavy, and not very easy to jump around in.
Show used to creep me out when I was a kid.
I love booze, booze loves me,
Bottoms up in one, two, three,
with a knick-knack, paddy-whack, passed out on the floor,
Al-co-hol-ic! Di-no-saur.
