I can not tell if the list is of underrated films or films that were not as popular as they should have been. Some of these films like River’s Edge and Sex Lives and Videotape were critically acclaimed. Body Double was fairly popular.

I agree about After Hours. Largely forgotten.
I was going to add Liquid Sky but it is not underrated, it is now considered the film that launched Independent films as a movement.

The Fabulous Stains - Diane Lane first major role as a punk rocker

Videodrome - Debbie Harry starred

The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years - Penelope Sphere’s Suburbia was listed in the article. The original Decline of Western Civilization is considered the definitive documentary of the LA punk scene and clips from the movie are still oft used. Part II that examined the debauchery of the Sunset Strip Hair Metal scene has largely been forgotten.

Honorable Mentions
Valley Girl - Not exactly a masterpiece but well above the usual boy meets girl from the opposite side of the tracks rom-com. Nowadays it is also a fun piece of early 80s New Wave era nostalgia. Usually forgotten when lists of 80s teen movies are created.

Superman III - On this list purely for being underrated. Maybe it was the portrayal of Superman as flawed but something about this film offended people. For years the film were used as a punch line to joke and the film become the go to example for bad/failed films. It was a pretty decent film that was not nearly THAT BAD.

Something Wild - Not exactly forgotten or panned, it still gets decent amount of late night cable airing but still is too often left off lists of 80s comedies.

Off Topic British Film
Breaking Glass - Hazel O’Conner’s charismatic performance as punk/new wave singer lifted thd film above the usual idealist sells out genre,
