The Eight Hundred
I have been to the movie theater 4 times since theaters opened up after the pandemic started to ease up.
One of the films I watched was "The Eight Hundred". I was surprised to see an article this morning about the film. It is now the highest grossing movie in 2020. The movie is a patriotic WWII drama about 800 Chinese soldiers that stood fast against the might of the Japanese army. In a way it is analogous to the American movie "Midway".
I imagine that most of the moviegoers who saw the film were from China. Since most of the U.S. theaters were shut down due to COVID, this film is relegated to niche market of art house and international films. Much of China is opened up and China has a market for new films.
“The Eight Hundred” has been able to single-handedly help China’s theater industry bounce back after the pandemic.
