Were these sublots in Saturday Night Fever unnecessary?

It seems that the subplots involving wanting to a buy car and looking, but not buying, and beating up the Hispanics for payback, and the gf accidentally getting pregnant, didn't really go anywhere. The brother priest subplot didn't seem to have a pay off either much.

So could they all have been cut and it wouldn't have made a difference really in the ending of the movie?

They were necessary to establish both the background and the context of the other events in the movie.

But how so? For example:

The character who kills himself at the end accidentally... He could have just done that from being drunk. He didn't need to run away from a right, and get a girl pregnant to push him into doing that. The other guys went out on the bridge, without needing those things happening to them, so why did he have to, in order for him to go with them?

Are you objecting to the accidental suicide itself or to the inclusion of what you believe to be an irrelevant event in the movie?

It was necessary to show the meaninglessness of that character's ambitions, the futility of trying to hold on to one's dreams in that social environment, and the way that the actions of the few have an impact on the lives of the many.

I know this is deep thinking, but try not to obsess over it.

Yeah those are good points, thanks. That makes sense.
