I know this thread probably won't get any replies because it's an old British TV drama and not American or geeky, but I thought it might be worth a try.

Grange Hill used to be on children's TV but it's one of those things adults enjoyed too. I've got a few box sets of seasons 1-10, but I haven't watched any episodes beyond season 10 (yet).

I get so attached to the characters. I can relate to Roland Browning a lot, even though I'm not fat, but I do think his character is an unrecognised Aspie. :) It seems he was treated like how a lot of Aspies were treated in school in the 80s because Asperger's syndrome wasn't heard of so much back then and he's not severe enough to be classed as autistic.

Any other Grange Hill fans here who I can talk to?

loved the theme tune and comic illustrations opening credits , felt sorry for the girl who missed the bus but always laughed at the sausage on a fork being thrown.

Thank you so much for replying! It's a shame interests in TV dramas like this aren't so popular among Aspies here.

I always found it a bit dark and depressing, I'm afraid. Like Eastenders, but for kids!

The "we're going to educate kids about topical social issues" storylines were also far too blatant for my liking, though Grange Hill certainly wasn't unique in that. Byker Grove, anyone?

I guess getting home from school was always a relief for me. To turn on the TV and be instantly reminded of the worst aspects of it wasn't very appealing (sorry!).

On a related note - Adele Rose, who originated Byker Grove ("the north's answer to Grange Hill") and was the longest-serving scriptwriter for Coronation Street, died on Dec 28 2020 aged 87.

Yeah I did hear that. Very sad.

I never watched Grange Hill when I was younger, because I never watched TV. It's only in the last 4 years I've suddenly developed an interest, when my brother had box sets of the first 4 series and he lent them to me to watch. They kind of sat on my shelf for months getting dusty, then one evening when I was bored I decided to give them a try. It only took about 3 or 4 episodes and then I was totally hooked. I just love the characters and the storylines.

Before I watched it, I used to think that it was just about geeky college students with Liverpool accents.

I loved Grange Hill! It played on the national TV network in Australia for a few years in the late 80s. The girls in it had the most beautiful musical accents

I watched it as a kid, but was never particularly into it. Much like another poster I think it was too near the mark for me - I hated school and didn't want to be reminded of it once it was over for the day.

I do remember one storyline that stuck in my brain for some reason. There was a girl, a bully, I guess you'd call her troubled. She was pretty unpleasant and in one episode she stuffed a load of, I think it was roof insulation or something, down the back of someone's shirt and they had a bad reaction to it and their skin went all blistered.

I have no idea why that scene/story stuck with me but I found it quite shocking at the time and have always remembered it.

The sausage on the fork thing though - I draw that on things to this day.

That was probably Imelda Davies. She was a proper chav (but was "punk" back then). I don't like her. I prefer Gripper, even though he was probably more threatening. Girl bullies have always frightened me more for some reason.

I wanted to say that I thought her name was Imelda but I didn't trust my memory of it enough. Anyway, I bet whoever wrote that wouldn't have imagined that a kid watching would still remember it 30 something years after it was shown.
