Me too!

May I recommend an abstract-expressionist?

Look up Philip Guston. Around 1970 he turned from doing beautiful if clunky (deliberately clunky) abstract paintings to doing these beauitful and even more clunky (clunkier?) cartoony paintings, and his love of Krazy Kat is very obvious. Take a look, you might like them a lot. Especially if there is a museum nearby and you can see one in person, which is always incredibly better than looking at a reproduction in a book.
