Courtney love and Darryl Hannah were both diagnosed as HFAs when they were children, but would probably be diagnosed with AS today.
Both of these people where dx'd as "mildly autistic" at a very young age, which here in the US at the time meant just that - mildly autistic. Such a dx in the US at the time was usually for children exhibiting verbal delays in addition to socialization issues, which is contrary to the diagnostic criteria for AS. There was no such thing as HFA then (both of these women are in their 40's now). I'm familiar with this because my brother, who's now 39, was examed for the diagnosis of "mildly autistic" back in the early 70's and they said he wasn't because he had no verbal delays. He is, however, very Aspie-like, and was even then (which is why he was sent to a diagnostician) although he has not ben dx'd with AS as I have.
I doubt either Love or Hannah would be dx'd as AS now. Love is clearly a borderline personality disorder (if not a full-blown narcissistic personality), but that aside, she exhibits none of the AS-specific traits, that I know of at least. I've read quite a lot that's been published about her childhood and her relationship with Cobain, and there was nothing in all of that that stood out to me as specifically Aspie-like. Hannah strikes me as very HFA-ish, but not at all AS. I always found her mildly annoying in that way I often find HFA people (no offense - I admit it's me, not them).
I know Spielberg likely has a professional dx, but I personally find that suspect. The man got the dx when AS was being touted as some kind of "genius syndrome" a few years back, where every genius in history was suddenly a suspected Aspie, and the whole thing strikes me as him trying to get himself into in the "Aspie genius club." Plus he's a Hollywood heavyweight - peope like that literally
buy doctors to tell them what they want to hear. I'm not just being cynical. Dr Drew, that Hollywood addiction specialist, says the same things - this is why people int hat industry have a hard time getting proper pshyciatric help when they need it.
