I guess it really depends on what you'd define as 'discovery' or 'learning'. Mythbusters just crushes hearsay, and I love em for that. Jamie's got a great knack for being real good when it comes to practical knowledge, especially about electronics and the like - if anything I think he's a bit more level than Adam in terms of taking on a project and being methodical about how he approaches it before he throws time and capital at it.

I like all that stuff too but, aside from A Haunting as you mentioned, whether its hauntings, alien sightings, african tribes, or space, it seems like every show is just taking the same available knowledge and repackaging it. I'd be more interested in the supernatural, space, and all that if I could hear something that I hadn't learned already but they seem to run shy on that for the most part. The other stuff like Mythbusters is more what you'd call practical knowledge, true it doesn't glow with that same spectacular existential ambiance but it is great to know that anything that you've had run past you and you may or may not have just dismissed it as a rumor, myth, or urban legend, you've got people sorting it out and giving it a pass or fail via scientific method. I guess in the end TV channels need new material and maybe one day space exploration, cultures, and the paranormal will yield breakthroughs but until then they need something educational and when it comes to the rest they can only repackage and reseal the same knowledge so many ways with so many pretty visuals before people get bored and just stop watching. Personally I've come to like the pragmatic knowledge shows just because I'm trying to push myself in that direction and whether its Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Alton Brown or Two Dudes Catering on the Food Network, I tend to like real life and real people being brought to the forefront.

I love MythBusters. I mean, come on. It's a couple guys building ridiculous things and causing untold destruction. What's not to like? Not to mention busting myths, which is just as cool. They explore a lot of things that people just take for granted and question our thinking about our most basic assumptions. I say there isn't enough of this!

But sometimes I wish they'd just research something before they test it. Reading the news would have told them that microwaved jawbreakers can explode and too many bug bombs can blow up your house. And some of their testing methods are somewhat unscientific. But I can't complain too much. The show is amazing and fun to watch. They blew up a freaking cement truck!

:o ! !

I can't get enough of Mythbusters! :D It's the most addictive show in the world. The only episode I didn't like was the yawning episode as the science was appallingly bad, but none of the main cast are scientists so I forgave them.

I also love watching Adam and Jamie as they're both so wonderful. Jamie has got to be the most interesting person in the world. Every episode I find out some new fact about his life, for example, on the Avalanche episode he mentioned that he sometimes goes into the snowy mountains for a few weeks and lives off the land. :-) I find him an endless goblet of pleasure and amusement. :-)

However, despite my undying love for the show, if it doesn't float your boat, it doesn't float your boat. :-)

I agree with what you said about the History Channel, there's way too much stuff about WWII on there so I normally avoid it. I am however a Mythbusters fan because it's one of the few shows out there than can bring science to the masses and show them that science can be FUN!

Plus it's got Kari Byron.

I seem to remember though that Grant did all the electronics stuff with Jamie and Adam being the mechanical experts. Some of the tests such as the one which covered switching your lights off when you leave the room (good or bad) were good basic science.

Plus there's Kari Bayron

Ed Almos

P.S. Did I mention that I liked Kari Byron on Mythbusters?

I wish they'd at least tip their hat to the science behind what they're doing. Seems like they're only about entertainment and trial-&-error. All well and good for a TV show that lives or dies by the ratings, but I personally would enjoy a 60 second "geek moment" in each segment where a guy in a lab coat pops in to explain the chemistry (or physics, or whatever's involved in that particular segment...), instead of the two hosts simply deciding the next step is to *use more gunpowder*, as they usually do. :?

Mythbusters rocks! Sorry, rb, but the silliness is fundamental to the workings of the show. Plus, Jamie is like a more tightly wound version of me (minus facial hair, plus hair), and, as edal mentioned, Kari Byron! I think that should be enough to sway the decision back to the correct answer. Correction, Kari in the silver paint experiment.

I saw my roommate in college watch it once. I agree that there was nothing good about the show.

??? I don't see much Aspieness in Jamie. He's what we Americans call a "dweeb," but dweebs aren't necessarily Aspies.

I've watched this show, but not regularly. When they make the jelly dummies is cool - it's even cooler when they shoot things at the jelly dummies. :P

Re: The History Channel - their programming has been more diverse in recent memory. I think being nicknamed "The Hitler Channel" got to them. I'll never give up my History channel though, and now I've gone digital I have the History International channel too, which I love, except when they air biops on the Spice Girls. But they air enough other cool stuff I can forgive them that.

Aw, I like Mythbusters and think the guys on the show have cool facial hair. If I had the time, I would buy some of the DVDs and watch them again at home. I think Mythbusters is very educational and potentially appealing to people of just about all ages. Urban myths annoy me, so I like how they dispel most of them.
