Who here has read the Golden Compass by Philip Pullman?

Who here is going to see the movie?

I want your opinions on any and everything you may have heard thus far in relation to all the mumbo jumbo about how Pullman is supposedly evil.

I've read and enjoyed the His Dark Materials trilogy and I'm looking forward to seeing The Golden Compass in theaters. I've never heard anything about how Philip Pullman is evil, but with a statement like;

"My books are about killing God."

I'm not surprised people would call him evil. The Golden Compass seemed pretty mild, but The Amber Spyglass was clearly about tearing down organized religion.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading the trilogy, and the movie trailers look intriguing, although I see Lyra more as a grimy-faced street urchin than the squeaky-clean preppy they show her as in the trailer.

We'll see.

I read the books years ago and really enjoyed them. I intend to see the movie if only so that I can be dissapointed by its lack of depth like I have been by every movie based on a book I have ever seen.

I haven't heard any of the buzz about him being evil but then I haven't really been paying attention.

I really hope the movie is good. The books were some of the best books written and they'll have to do something really bad to screw it up.

But you know, if this film is a success then maybe the other two will be made into films.

And the Golden Compass (the book) is called Northern Lights here in the UK.

I love the "His Dark Materials" books. I'm seeing The Golden Compass tomorrow. I've heard some pretty irksome things about it, like they cut out the last 100 pages and the ending is very abrupt. (It seems this was a last minute decision because scenes from the book's climax were shown in the trailer....) I also don't like that they apparently watered down the books controversial elements....

Pullman certainly isn't evil. He's disgruntled and has strong opinions, though. Christians hate him because he hates their religion, so they dub him evil, when part of why he hates their religion is because anyone who's critical of it is automatically dubbed "evil." Vicious cycle, eh? XD Whatever; Christians have their Narnia, don't they? And really, if you take Narnia or His Dark Materials at face value then you can enjoy them as fantasy regardless of their Christian or anti-Christian themes.

Was forced to read them in school. They were ok.

Might watch the movie sometime. Either that or Hitman, I'm old enough to see both. ;)

They cut out the last 100 pages? Man there's going to be a lot of deleted scenes on the DVD.

I'm not sure that I can already see the film where I live, but I plan to. I have read the books when they were published here and loved them a lot, they're one of my favourite. I'm not sure I'm looking that much forward to seeing the film, because I fear that they seriously messed with the novel's details. I also think it's rather sad that I've read some big reviews and all of them were on Nicole Kidman and that other guy, although they're a lot less protagonists than Lyra is.

I loved the book, and I saw the movie last night. Not bad for a rough cut. The film looked amazing, the animals were terrific, the cast was exquisite; however, the more I think about it, I was a little disappointed that they had to cut out so much. Still, it was the director's decision to move the last three chapters to the possible film version of The Subtle Knife, and if Phil can approve of that, I can too.

Though my sister, a big fan of the trilogy, seemed more disappointed than I was. Not that she thought it was bad, but that she's a stickler for film adaptations that try to explain everything for people unfamiliar with the source material; she didn't like Donnie Darko because of this.

Overall, I thought it was enjoyable, and I can't wait to see the director's cut.

Ack! I didn't realize it was coming out this soon!

I want to go see it with my daughter.
We read the series together back when I read and she and her mom listened until falling asleep.

I really liked all three books.

The His Dark Materials books are some of my favourite books. And so far the film sounds disappointing. I'll reserve judgement until I see it though.

Don't know the books, but I saw the film last week. It was perhaps a bit rushed, but otherwise I loved it. And the CGI was really really good.
Now I'm thinking of buying the books.

The Golden Compass opened to $27 million here in the US out of a $200 million budget.
Eragon opened similarly last December, but that cost $75 million to do.
