I've just finished watching Napoleon Dynamite which is at times cringe worthy and also quite (embarrassingly) familiar.

He's very very obviously Aspergers but they never even mention the condition or even suggest that he's got a condition. Also, it's obviously hereditary in the film.

I was wondering;

1. What people thought of the film
and
2. If anyone knows of other movies which are similarly about these sorts of characters but don't mention the condition (ie: not obvious films like Rain Man).

How about BIRDY (1986) starring Mathew Modine.

I would say "Forest Gump". Tom Hanks plays a very "aspie-like" character on that film. Also, when it shows Forest as a child...quite aspie like also.

Both Edward Scissorhands and Doc Brown are both perfect Asperger candidates. :)

I always thought of Edward Scissorhands to be an autie and not an aspie :P

The only significant difference between Asperger's and HFA is Dyspraxia.

Heh, it's funny- this just occurred to me the other night while re-watching Shawshank Redemption. Andy's character is such an Aspie.

There is actually a video on youtube or Aspergers and they use clips from Napoleon Dynamite to point out examples.

Forrest Gump in the original book was a HFA savant.

Thanks Kattoo, that was absolutely brilliant.

Anyone who wants some info/examples of aspergers would do well to watch this...
(Kattoo's link, just reposted as a YouTube video).

Lars and the Real Girl

Lars is defintely an Aspie or HFA.

Hugs feel like electrocution to him.
He is unable to make friends & make small talk with others.
The delusion he suffers throughtout the movie is his thinking that a sex toy is an actual person and he makes the sex toy his GF.

I LOVE Napoleon Dynamite! Napoleon is definitely an aspie in my book, along with Kip, Pedro and Deb.

I'm sure that Napoleon is the sort of thing that Hollywood NTs would come up with if they got all the worst traits of aspergers in the most extreme cases and ignored all the good.

I don't know anyone with ALL of his traits but I know quite a few who have many of the traits, though not necessarily as bad as him.
