I agree with what most others said, in those epic lists. I kept thinking, "Oh yeah...that was really good too." I also really enjoyed A Very Long Engagement. It is definitely historical, and it's more from a first-person stance. I'm a sucker for Audrey Tautou!

I want to add Good Morning Vietnam. Humor carries people at times like that. I'll think of more.
