Professor X here, I sincerely wanted to find out if there are any fans out there of the above mentioned subject area.. I tend to watch a great deal of Horror movies like Silent Hill,The Omen,Open Your Eyes, & Bruiser but, I also include films like LOTD,Star Wars,The Matrix,etc.. Well, any/all are welcome to reply back..

Don't think anyone mentioned "The Prince of Darkness" by Carpenter, or "Avalon", both of which I adore, though for different reasons. And I also like "Mimic" , and "Twelve Monkeys".

... ... omg, noone listed "The Fly", Cronenberg version. or "I, Robot".

"Jaws" anyone? "War of the Worlds" ( Spielberg ), and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"

"28 Days Later" ! !

Gah...I really didn't like I, Robot.

Well, I like films period.

But...

My favourite genres are horror and science fiction.
Probably too many to list

The only horror I don't like is remakes of good classics...

eg:
- Halloween Remake
- Amityville Remake
- Omen Remake
etc..

The Texas remake was ok but lost the gritty home-made feel of the original.

I didn't the first time because I thought it had betrayed the spirit of Asimov, but on watching it a second time ( for son in robot mania), was struck by the idea of a super-robot who if programmed to protect humans takes this literally, as a robot would in fact!!

And then remembered that the last story in the book I Robot actually sketched out this theme, ( though rather feebly!) and was able to enjoy Will , and special effects.

Yep, those are pretty much my favorite genres. ^_^

I mostly disliked the characters, the product placement, and the CGI.

What product placement? No, seriously, I can't remember a single one, how odd.

I thought the CGI was ok because at least it was mainly robots being represented, inanimate, whereas when it is animals or people or supposedly organic beings in general I often dislike it. Like Gollum in LOTR, or King Kong, for instance.

I guess characters is personal taste. I quite like Will Smith in general so unless he's being soupy sentimental I enjoy his characters.

But it's interesting, because one fantasy/horror comedy film, Warlock, with Julian Sands and Richard E Grant, that I used to love, now seems intolerable to me/feels too unpleasant. The nastiness and cynicism and brutality in it is no longer funny. I know that my sister for example would have trouble with I, Robot because of the characters for that reason.

I love those genres, but I'm not as big on movies as some other people. Movies are too short. They can barely scratch the surface of an imagined reality and its characters. And movie series never feel like they fit together unless they're all filmed at the same time, like Lord of the Rings. I prefer books, TV and games.

I'm a fan of Doctor Who and Red Dwarf. Futurama's technically sci-fi too. I like the Evil Dead trilogy, and the film Battle Royale (that technically falls into Horror). I'm also a huge Douglas Adams fan.

I don't really like most sci-fi movies made past the mid-'90s. They just lost something that I can't quite put my finger on.

I partly agree with that. And about not being able to put finger on it too.

Now you mention it I remember them but they just seemed like jokes to me, maybe because they aren't products that I'm in the least bit interested in!
Hmmmm... I think I see it as harmlessly and enjoyably camp, but it's true that cynicism, irony, disillusion, alienation, etc can look like spite.

But I like the way Will Smith fights to find out the truth. I like that a lot.

I wonder what the change in Sci-fi in the 90s was.
