I don't watch TV ever, generally. So the number of TV shows that I've watched and enjoyed I can count on one hand; X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, and Six Feet Under. For someone who prefers TV series to be non-episodic, with long story arcs that go over the entire series, can anyone recommend a quality TV series? Preferably one that has been released in a digital format at some stage (ie. DVD).

Discovery Channel and Food Network have shows to watch during prime time.

Mythbusters
Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe
The Deadliest Catch
Future Weapons

Good Eats
Throwdown with Bobby Flay
Iron Chef America
Unwrapped
Ace of Cakes
Dinner: Impossible
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

The list goes on.

Stargate has pretty long story arcs, and should appeal to someone who enjoyed X-Files and BG. Likewise Babylon 5.

That '70s Show (shown in reruns on FX), one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. A lot of it really seems ad-libbed, but it has an oddball, bizarre sense of humor (like the use of "burns").

DEXTER!

it's not really in the same category, but it seems that a lot of people who like six feet under like this one.

i'll warn you though, everyone i know who's watched it got completely addicted. i watched the first season like three times, then ordered showtime to see the second season on demand

I second these suggestions. Honestly Lost is brilliant, and actually gets better if you watch it on DVD.

Oh, Life on Mars is good too.

Loved "Six Feet Under"-cried at end of final episode.
"Scrubs" is great fun & clever, "Becker" is cynical & paradoxical, like me-but those are sitcoms, not what you asked for. I don't follow sci-fi programs.
Currently enjoying watching series "Without a Trace" (had never paid any attention to it until it went into syndication). It has a few storylines that play out over multiple seasons.

Highly recommend "DaVinci's Inquest", cop drama set in Vancouver-it's so atmospheric (cool instrumental music) & a lot is left to imagination (viewer has to fill in the blanks). Stories often leave one hanging, with minimal explanation or even no solution-which is infuriating for me, yet it's just such a great show I still watch each episode (there are 7 seasons). Canadian shows (the few I've seen aired on US tv) are often of remarkably high quality.
