I guess this one needs a little explaining. Have you ever had an experience where you went to see a movie at the theater, having NO idea what it was going to be like, but you do it anyway just because you're curious?

This has happened to me 3 times so far.

First time was in 1998, about a month into when I was first diagnosed with Crohn's. I wanted to have an excuse to go to my hometown's bookstore, so I asked to go see a movie at the theater which was nearby. But since I had no real intent on seeing the movie itself, I just picked one at random because it gave me something to do. (It was "Sphere", starring Dustin Hoffman; and it's plot was surprisingly good to me)

Second time was in the same year, but late into October. My brother wanted me to see the movie 'Dark City' with him, so I said yes, knowing that I would get to go shopping after the movie was over. This experience though, wasn't as memorable. This was the only time in my life that I never fully understood what was going on while watching a movie; it felt so surreal throughout the entire thing. If it wasn't for the fact that I still remember what me and my brother were talking about before we got to the movies (my first George Carlin CD), I would never have remembered that night at all.

The third and most recent time was in 2004, with the movie "Secret Window", starring Johnny Depp. My initial reason for seeing it was because I thought it would be cool to see a new movie on its debut night. Hell, I didn't even know it was based off a Stephen King novella until I found out while watching the opening credits! But this experience was certainly the best of the three, because I got into the movie right away, and thoroughly enjoyed it, up to and including the Karma Houdini ending.

So, has anyone else here on this forum have a similar experience of going into a movie 'cold', whether you ended up liking the movie or not? Feel free to share... ^_^

I've done that before, but there always was a reason other than just going to see a random movie. Mostly commonly I went out with friends, and watched what they were watching. Movies I saw with friends include Final Destination 2, Narnia, Freddy vs. Jason, National Security, and a movie I don't remember the title of, but was about the Rock going to South America to bring back some rich guy's son.

Edit: And Kenzy, on Christmas break. That was the oddest one.

Perhaps this isn't quite what you are asking, but I've been dragged to movies by people and usually it's to stuff I had no interest in seeing.

The best experience was watching "Being John Malcovich" - I had heard of the film, but thought it was about a group of wannabe actors. I had no expectation of the absurdest humor of the film until I found myself in the middle of it. I ended up liking the film quite a lot.

At times I might rent a DVD that I know nothing about, but found the cover art appealing in some way. I found one of my favorite films "The American Astronaut" this way (not to be confused with another film with a similar title - The American Astronaut is a odd low budget western sci-fi rock and roll musical.)

I think the idea of just going to a movie theater and randomly picking a film to watch sound like it could be fun.

I don't think I've ever gone to the movies on a whim before, but I do love Secret Window. It was one of the DVDs I got for Christmas this year.
