Personally, I liked the movie though I don't think its the masterpiece that everyone is making it out to be.
Batman Begins was a movie that caught me by surprise. Call me crazy, but I found it to be a uplifting movie. I know it sounds crazy, but what moved me about it was that this man (Bruce Wayne) was a man who was tempted to do the wrong thing after his parents were murdered, but didn't. He used his anger to his advantage, but he didn't allow it to turn him into a monster. I was hoping that the sequal would focus on Batman's ideals being put to the test, to see him being drove into a rage by the Joker, but in the end still holding true to his ideals.
Chris Nolan an co. didn't get into that. Yeah, its kind of brought up in the end, but it felt like an afterthought, like they just said about Batman,"He is incouruptable. Just thought I'd tell you that." Its as if the writers lost interest in Batman as a character and decided to focus on everyone else instead. I hate to call out on some of the supporters on this, but what annoys me is that the die hard fans didn't see this as a problem. I remember before Batman Begins came out that the complaint about Tim Burton's Batman was that it didn't focus on Batman; that the villians were the main focus when it should've been Batman. After The Dark Knight came out, I've been reading things like, "I don't mind it focusing on the other characters." and "It should have been less Batman and more Joker!". So why is reducing Batman to a side character bad when Burton did it, but not when Nolan does it? I didn't mind that aspect so much in the Tim Burton Batman, because he was portrayed as a mysterious character. You just knew his origin and thats it. He was meant to be this dark force of justice. In the Nolan films, they went to great lengths to explore Batman's psychology, how he gets his gadgets, what drives him, etc. So its problematic for me because it brings up the question of whats the point of developing this character if you're just going to reduce him to being a co-star in his own sequel?
I thought everything else was very good, especially the performances by Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart. I just found it to be a wasted opportunity to see Batman's dedication to his ideals get pushed to the test. If it focused more on Batman and less on the other characters, I would've liked it a lot better.
