EDITED TO ADD: Like RedRocket mentioned above, Screenwriting IS a highly competitive field. But this is the type of business where you create your own luck by hard work, diligence, and a healthy dose of self-discipline. I speak from experience; I've been at this for five years (not as a professional, mind you) and the more I work at mastering my craft, the more my chances of 'turning pro' increase.
