I guess I'm like the last one in town to subscribe as many friends and co-workers have tried to convince me for years to subscribe. I only decided to now because our wonderful Hastings store collapsed under the weight of several feet of snow on the roof. Sure there are a few other video stores in town but on the other end of town and not economical to drive so far to return videos. So I finally subscribed to Netflix.

I have to say its a bit of a pain to sift through their videos to find something to add to my queue. A lot of what they have is old crap. And there aren't many new movies out right now that I want to see. Seems like Hollywood can't make good movies the past few years. The only upside is Netflix offers things like every season of Sliders and Nowhere Man on dvd. Plus I'd like to see the British The Office series and see how it differs from the US version. Plus they do have British comedies I like such as Keeping Up Appearances. The bummer was my 2nd dvd to arrive was broken in two. They really should package them better. I mean I used to subscribe to books on CD club and they always were wrapped in bubblewrap. I imagine a lot of Netflix discs get broken in shipment the way they are sent.

Anyone else care to share their experience?

I subscribe to Netflix. I like to click on the tab at the top "watch instantly" and watch a movie on my computer.

I haven't had any dvd's arrive damaged yet - but you're right, they ARE packaged poorly.

I've had Netflix for 4 years and I've never had a problem keeping my queue up. It's usually somewhere between 80-150. For some movie ideas you should google stuff like "top movies of 2008", or check out IMDB's top movie list.

I've had a few DVDs come so scratched that I've been unable to play them, but every time I've notified them via the website I get a new copy in the mail the next day. I've never had one that was completely broken before.

i joined i think in 2007...i started out using it to get anime I couldn't normally get at blockbuster or any other local rental store...but now I use it for everything. and just recently I joined gamefly for games. blockbuster was too limited with their games....1 week...you just get into a game and then you gotta take it back... and that restocking fee....lame...

I can't use the watch instantly feature because I have slow phone dialup internet service. So have to wait for the dvds to arrive and hope they aren't damaged.

I guess I'm just too picky and not amused by most movies. I have only 45 dvds in queue and the majority of them are the 6-9 disc sets of old tv shows. I used to spend a hour in Hastings looking for some new release that looked good. Seems Hollywood has nothing to offer anymore other than B comedies. Sci Fi, action and adventure seems a thing of the past.

paradoxically, Hollywood is in the business of making money, rather than movies...;) The more money, the less experimentation.

i had netflix for about a month. We gave it up because we couldn't agree what to rent...;)

What are you both Aspies? Couldn't you sign up for the two at a time plan then each of you select one movie of your choosing?

Okay, I'm back. Just curious which plan are each of you subscribing to? I just changed mine to 3 at a time, but feel stupid at the same time for falling for it.

I used to be a Netflix member(3 at a time), was for a year or so, then switched to Blockbuster Online(3 at a time) because they offered free in-store game rental coupons with the same service Netflix offered for cheaper, finally quit that too after a year and half when they tried to cut those game coupons out and raise the price. My #4brother is a Netflix member currently(also 3 at a time).

For me there are tons of old movies I've never seen that I like to watch, my brother considers most of these "boring". He mostly gets animation and toilet humor comedies. When I was a member I got one or two broken discs and a few unplayable discs due to scratching. But they were always good about getting me another copy or sending the next movie when I notified them. Their service has improved since I quit and my brother joined, it used to take a week to get a new movie, now it takes two days and it's actually cheaper than when I was a member.

If you want to rent a really funny show, I'd suggest you go for the British comedy Coupling, if you haven't seen it. It was hilarious, though the last season's disc was a bit disappointing as one of the main characters wasn't in it and his replacement just wasn't as good.

And I have to disagree about the lack of Sci-Fi, action, and adventure movies in the last few years.
From 2006:
300
Casino Royale
Apocalypto
Jet Li's Fearless
Night at the Museum
Rescue Dawn
Rocky Balboa
Smokin' Aces
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Tristan + Isolde
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
The Prestige

From 2007:
3:10 to Yuma
The Bourne Ultimatum
Hot Fuzz
Planet Terror
Transformers
Live Free or Die Hard
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Rush Hour 3
Shoot 'Em Up
Shooter
Spider-Man 3
Wild Hogs
The Kingdom
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Stardust
The Bucket List
Enchanted
Into the Wild
Meet the Robinsons
I Am Legend
etc.,

From 2008:
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Cloverfield
Death Race
WALL·E
The Forbidden Kingdom
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Quantum of Solace
Get Smart
Tropic Thunder
The Spiderwick Chronicles
Rambo
The Dark Knight
Kung Fu Panda
Punisher: War Zone
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Hancock
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
RocknRolla
Street Kings
Body of Lies
Eagle Eye
etc.,

There's plenty to like from the last few years and this year is looking to be pretty good I think.

I started out as 1 at a time, then quickly changed to 2 and now 3 at a time. The problem is towards the end of the week the movies stop. I mean Netflix doesn't ship out on Saturdays and Sundays post office is closed. I know Sunday is suppose to be the day of rest per the Bible, but can't they get Agnostics and Atheists to deliver mail on Sundays? Because of this there is a lull from Sat-Mon where you end up with nothing to watch. And yes I am probably getting spoiled with home delivery of movies but there is nothing else to do in this town in winter with it being so cold and several feet of snow on the ground you can't get out for a walk in the woods or go to the lake, etc.

I get my movies from bit torrent sites. You get a much bigger selection, plus you don't have to pay.

I wonder how many people sign up for the 8 a month or whatever the max is? Its kinda expensive. Would be a full time job having to watch movies! LOL Course it might be good for a family so you could rent movies for the parents and then cartoons for the little kiddies both.
