"Friends" didn't get canceled. It ended. There's a difference.
What is the difference?
Cancellation = Show is terminated by the network. Usually ended without a finale (with only two exceptions - "The Wonder Years" and "Arrested Development" both of which used hurried scenes to wrap up the show - the former with an ending narration and the latter with a hastily written final episode). Usually a beloved and short lived show will have fans who will protest its cancellation. The two most high profile being "Firefly" and "Pushing Daisies". Sometimes a canceled show will be picked up by another network, as was the case of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" or "Scrubs" or will be resumed by the network after a certain event ("Family Guy" resumed after the DVDs of the first three seasons became some of the biggest selling DVDs of all time).
Conclusion = Show is ended from a mutual decision between the network, producers and actors. Sometimes a show has a previously set conclusion date ("Lost"). It usually has a large and high profile finale (like "Friends" had) which wraps everything up or leaves characters at a point where their adventures would cease ("Seinfeld", "The Sopranos" at least according to one theory) or things return to normal (many anime). Sometimes a show is made to have a specific amount of episode and then end (the animes "FLCL" and "Excel Saga", The original UK "Life on Mars"). Sometimes the show is canceled, but has a proper conclusion (both "Stargate" shows, "Arrested Development", the original run of "Doctor Who") that leaves the door open for more episodes or a film.
