I think I am the only person I know that can watch movies by Ingmar Bergman and get something out of them. The rest of my family calls his films "boring", but to me, they are anything but.....

My favorites are Fanny and Alexander, Cries and Whispers, The Virgin Spring, Shame, Persona, and The Seventh Seal. Each of these films totally blew me away in their own different ways.....

To me, he was truly one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived. I grew up watching his films, actually. I hope I am not the only one here who appreciates his work....

I enjoyed Seventh Seal when I saw it a few years ago; the others I want to watch, hopefully soon.

Did you ever see the show SCTV? I think you would enjoy this:

I like Bergman, too, though I find him a bit too depressing at times. I've seen Fanny and Alexander, Cries and Whispers, The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, Wild Strawberries, and Persona. Virgin Spring is now in my Netflix Queue.

I only ever saw Seventh Seal and Hour of the Wolf. Liked the former, the latter was certainly...different.

The Seventh Seal is one of the best movies I have ever seen.
The Chess metaphor was just brilliant as was the acting.

The Virgin Spring is also an excellent movie.

spoiler wrote:

Was anyone surprised by who died at the end of that?

It also had one of the most disturbing Rape scenes I've ever seen, simply because it was so banal.
And when they kill her, it's like they weren't going to kill her, but her crying was making them feel guilty so they smashed her head in. It wasn't very graphic but quite powerful.

As was the scene where Von Sydow sat and watched them sleep, he was going to kill them, but he wasn't the sort who'd slit someones throat in their sleep.

Actually there a LOT of powerful shots in that film.

Winter Light was also a beautiful one.
The singing was nice. And the monologues were works of art.
And the reflection about Christs suffering on the cross I found very interesting.

Yes. He's one of my favorite directors. "Persona" is my favorite of his films. You should also see the 5-hour television version of "Fanny and Alexander" if you haven't. It's a lot better than the theatrical cut. The trilogy( 'Through a Glass Darkly', 'Winter Light' and 'The Silence') is also great. I've seen a lot of his films, about 18 or so. Did you see 'Saraband', his final film. That was great also. Like Bergman I also have a religious upbringing. My dad's a pastor. Having this religious background makes the issues that Bergman deals with more easy to relate to. Issues such as struggles with faith, etc.

Thanks. I've added Through A Glass Darkly, Winter Light, and The Silence to my Netflix Queue.

ah yes, big aspie obsession, although slightly faded right now. I wrote my thesis about the photography of Sven Nykvist in the Trilogy. I really love the visuals in Bergmans films. technically, most of his films are perfect. "Winter Light" might seem boring to most people but if you look closely at the shots and sequences and how they communicate things in symbolic, non-verbal ways, it's really amazing. even more so with "Silence". you can really read so much into it.

anyway, don't want to get verbose on the subject :p but you're definitely not alone OP.

I like The Seventh Seal and Persona. Most of his family/relationship films I really couldn't get into though. I have a difficult time relating to the characters.

Since I last posted, I have watched The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass Darkly, and Winter Light. WOW.

Tomorrow or Monday I'll watch The Silence.
