Read the book, it's even better. The end is BRILLIANT. The author, Richard Matheson is a great writer. He's written quite a few books that have become movies, although most people don't know it. He wrote the novels that were the inspiration for I Am Legend, Stir of Echoes, Somewhere In Time, What Dreams May Come, and a boatload of Twilight Zone episodes.
I Am Legend is one of my favorite books. And eventhough it was written in 1954, it doesn't seem dated at all.

A far better ending, I was expecting the zombies to turn nasty and I was shocked when they went away at the end.

The original movie ending retains the spirit and overall point of the book. The point being that Neville is the monster and that "good" and "evil" aren't black and white concepts, it's all relative.
In the book, as he is waiting to die, he looks out of a window to see all of the "vampires" and they recoil in fear. His last thought as he dies is, "I am legend...".
Brilliant, brilliant book.

My understanding is that "I am Legend" refers to humans literally becoming myth in a world replaced by vampires. And when Neville goes out to hunt vampires he becomes a monster and legend to the Vampires.

I'm going to put I am Legend on my list of books to read.

I liked the original ending better. I can't really figure out why, but I think it was better when he died.

But they left a lot of loose plot threads with that ending. There hints throughout the entire movie that the vampires were intelligence creatures. Neville even considers this for a moment and then quickly dismisses as the implications of it become clear.
The reason the ending was changed is because a focus group screening the film didn't like the Neville remained an atheist at the end.
