Sorry about all these posts!

Lau - concerning the computer world: is anyone developing better search engines? Just having a vast sea of collated data is almost useless, even when it is gathered into one spot like PubMed. Are there any integrative search engines being developed? Analytic search engines? Filters for relevancy? Checks for accuracy, breadth, depth, precision, clarity? This is all so time consuming!

Gromit: How are students now being taught to learn? The emphasis must be off memorization now, ...but, on to what? Is the emphasis now on where to look for info? This wad of web info is going to be terribly unmanageable in another generation. Are they being taught how to connect their ideas with one another? How are they being taught to spend their time? I do not have time to check the sources of each and every article, research paper and book that I read - how are they being taught to do this?

Anyone with info is welcome to reply. I am asking for a lot here and apologize in advance. You don't have to cover every question, or in depth. I know you are all time crunched as well. Will appreciate any assistance.

Before we used to stumble about in ignorant darkness now we have information "white out".
What we need is something to separate the wheat from all the chaff....

Try the WolframAlpha Search Engine- www.wolframalpha.com
Try scroogle- www.scroogle.org
Try Scirus for scientific search results and research reports- www.scirus.com

If you need anymore, then just google, "scientific search engines." Hope this helps.

In 1980, Robert Heinlein stated that the increase in general knowledge at the time was going to require the development of a new sort of specialist, capable of integrating information from a wide variety of fields. He referred to such a person as a "generalist".

Of course, at the time, he could have no idea of the coming of the Internet (although fifteen years earlier he had predicted that there was a technology, known at the time but whose ramifications were not yet explored, that would have as profound and far-reaching an effect on society as had the automobile - in the 1980 update, he guessed that the technology might be the computer chip). Today, it's not the general specialist we need - it's better search engines for those generalists to use! :)

OMG chuck, that's awful. we use walgreens, we also use target. half the time the doctor does not explain anything about the meds and we rely on the pharmacist or the internet. because we have the sense to check the meds before taking them. so many people haven't got a clue....

team. right.
there is no team for us.
