Forgive me if this is redundant, but I'm new. I am almost 100% sure I fit the diagnosis of Asperger's. How does one go about getting a clinical diagnosis? Where does one go from there? Any recommendation in terms of books or other resources is appreciated.

Regards.

The only official diagnosis is from a doctor, otherwise its just assumptions and speculation. I sent my old psych info about Aspergers and circled all the parts that described me (everything except not wanting to be held) and he said it sounded like the missing piece to the puzzle.

Where I live, I need a doctor to refer me to a psychiatrist who specializes in AS. I had to start through a Community Clinic to get a doctor. They all have waiting lists, so it's been about year and I'm still not diagnosed.

They are particularly interested in one's earliest childhood, so the family might be able to help out with details.

a dx is a good idea but at the same time, if you've done the research and your almost 100% sure, you know yourself as well as a doctor, and since theres no blood test or anything like that, its just behavior and thought processes, I wouldn't put any special value on a dx for yourself. Not saying don't get one, especially since a doctor can help you, its just that my personal experience with psychiatrists is that they didn't help me much since I think I understand myself pretty well. I was diagnosed when I was younger, but being diagnosed doesn't make you have it. All it means is that a doctor agrees with you (you having looked into it and decided you have it). But do what you think is best, a lot of people find a sense of relief because they don't feel comfortable until they know from an authoritative source.

As for books and resources, I have only read one full book on it, and I dont reccomend it. Don't remember the author, but the book was called "solutions for adults with aspergers". Its entire focus was "here is how people with AS inconvenience NTs and here is how to stop hurting them". I don't know how many other books out there are like that, but I've seen a documentary like it, so be wary of resources written by NTs with a complete "others" focused approach.

I'm sure I'm AS but I need the Dx to get an occupational therapist, who will teach me social skills so I can get groceries without having a meltdown, and also so I can get along with people when I want to (which I can't do now).

Welcome! Didn't notice it before.

Please ignore the threads and comments made by Spy, he's a flaming troll who pops up every month or two and will be dealt with as soon as a mod gets to business.

However, WHEN a Mod will deal with it is uncertain. we need more mods.

Welcome,

Hang around here and see if you relate, if you do, well, it one of those if the shoe fits things. Most medical treatment does not seem to be for AS, but for other conditions. It all depends with how comfortable you are with it. To some it is, well that explains a lot of things, and they go on with life. Not much choice on that.

I do have a magic charm I will sell you for $10,000. Never can tell.
