Loonies were named for the loon on the back.

Then the $2 coin was invented. It sort of went around the country that we should call it a Toony, so we could have Loony Toony money. And they did.

That's what I remember, anyway.

I love the idea of being able to pay for things w/out having to bother with bills and change.
And yeah, you're right, that's how they came up with the toonie.
