When people ask how I am doing or how my day has been I usually just say "good how are you?" because I don't feel like going in to deatail. Sometimes I say it with out even thinking even if I am not good or don't care how the other person's feeling or how their day went. Does anyone else do this?

In many cases people use the expression "How are you?" like the use the expression "Hello". Generally they are not looking for a detailed response. But sometimes they sense something is wrong and when they say "How are you?", they are really looking to find out if you are experiencing any major problem. So the answer can depend on their tone of voice, eye contact, and general concern for your well being.

Yep, I think that is super standard acceptable behavior. Certainly most people say it with no intentions of meaning anything by it. Don't think that you are being cold or uncaring if you only do it as a formality. :)
