oh, dear. Well, I can see that you think that he is a perfect gentleman when not actually imbibing, however I think you rather miss the mark on that one, old friend. I, myself, beautiful, graceful and in my own magnificence of presence felt the old twinge of inadequacy at the remark when first I read it, and hurriedly put myself into the former category, but felt he would have put me in the latter.

I am often sideswiped by the casual way of those that judge appearances. We scrub, we pluck, we shape, we brush we curl we dab, we wipe it off and try again, we fluff, we primp and walk out into the world - and one off hand casual comment because we don't measure up to some professional ultimate in magazine catalogue and 'meh .. . !' they just turn the page.

Where do they get that feeling that somehow if we don't please them, we aren't? I mean the mere idea that they think the proper response IS to judge just confounds me to speechlessness.

Ah Krex and Nan! Our animal saviours. The world does not give you what you deserve for your kind hearts. I believe there is a special place in the great hereafter for people like the two of you!

I am also on computer probation. Between here and Facebook, my family were beginning to forget what I looked like. It has opened there eyes to the reality of how much DOESN'T get done when MOM spends all HER time on the computer. No clean underwear isn't fun. I am getting more tired of the Pongo hair than they are so I will have to dust and vacuum before I get to spend more than a few minutes at a time.

Oh, not quite! I see that as of today he's been off the grog for nine days. So what he said was on Day 8 of sobriety. All ethanol gone from the blood system, and the DTs over and done, one hopes. So it isn't alcohol talking, it's rage. Fine, he's allowed! But I still don't like what he said.

Maybe it's a guy thing to be all, "Let me tell you whether you measure up to my impeccable standards or not," and a girl thing to be all, "Gee, it's up to you to decide, who am I to say." The "Post a Picture of the Real You" thread would seem to support this thesis. :?

I'm using up far too much head space on this whole thing!

krex - i'm so sorry that had to happen. geese mate for life.

it never ceases to amaze me that people do not see that other forms of life feel. they may not be like us, but many (if not all) have emotions, memories, are capable of the kinds of thought we pompously think only the human species can manage. for all we know, some are capable of thought processes we are not even yet able to approach.

given what you saw on the roadway, we obviously do not all manage our place in life very well.

we are carnivores. we must kill to eat. but we need not kill wantonly or without regard... that is so sad, so sad. to waste any life is a travesty.

Nan, the reason I got tickets to go to Woodstock to begin with was to see those guys. They didn't show, bummer. Later, by a couple of years, I drove to Dallas to see them, didn't have a ticket. Two people in front of me before I could get a ticket and they shut the ticket window. They asked me if I wanted tickets to see Elvis, who would be there in a week. Blasphemy.

As I watched the video, for some reason I was thinking Hammond B-3, I'm sure I knew better at the time. But i was looking for the tell tale whirling amp. It wasn't in that vid, it did come with that instrument he was playing but he opted to go directly into an amp, without it. What that keyboard is and what really lent the Moodys their sound was the Mellotron and it's off shoots. Which interestingly enough (to me) had it's roots in part of the B-3. Ask a kid today what a B-3 is and he'll most likely ask you if it's a bomber. Well it was, lol. Man, what a sound. You guys know that sound, think SteppenWolfe music and that's the Hammond B-3, nothing like it.

I'm a YouTube junky, I admit it. Most of the ones that have good sound are the ones that are ripped off from the music videos. So I don't watch the live cell phone type very often, a few noteable exceptions. I got on a Devo kick the other evening and was surprised, big time. I enjoyed watching the old Devo vidoes, looked up some lyrics and so on, my usual. Then I hit a interview, with the "older" Devos, I was dumbfounded (not hard to do). I started watching their live vids, amazing. I mean these guys were doing hand motions, the singer, that I only saw much later with Talking Heads and REM. These guys could rock, in live performances, still can, so I hear. They would find the old Moogs that were broken, that could do something still and when they would really break, have to find a repair man to fix the broken instrumant, but not really fix it or it wouldn't do the sound they wanted. You figure out how to explain that to someone, lol. One guy said they were messing with one, took a break and then heard someone playing it wonderfuly and asked who it was, it was the damn thing playing itself. I have a totaly different out look about Devo. I think they had an influnce that I can only now see.

Hey der 8)

I don't really care to get into a discussion about Dick.

Being off the booze for 8 full days is a good thing. That being off the drink for 8 days isn't the cure, the fix the head needs to see with clear eyes. Some never do, even though they never touch another drop. I suppose it's a personal thing, what you hope to achive out of it. Me, I decided slow death wasn't pleasent and life had become unmanageable. Funny that the docotr would now be talking to me about giving up control, that I may have control issues. I think that's funny as hell. (not that I'll ignore it completely, but there are aspects of control, I can not afford to give up.) And in the next breath say he wasn't too up on the idea of increasing valium for reasons. After all my history shows, dependancy. What he is ignoring is, the why I did it to begin with. I'll sic the wife on him next time, she isn't too f*****g happy with his look at my past. (even doctors get caught up in the 12 step BS) I guess what I'm saying is the stinkin thinkin, that comes along with the drinkin, doesn't just magicaly disappear.

Now, there are at least 3 of us, here in the cafe, that have somewhat the same feelings on at least one method of stopping drinking. In a way, we all three had to find another, but we all learned a bit from more traditional approaches. As I have said, I have an axe to grind with the better known of the programs, that there are many and not just in the AS group, that just don't fit in with the program, as it is set up. It's needs brought into the 21st century badly. My axe to grind, but always looking for volunteers for the cause. I think in some ways it was harder for us to stop drinking, the emotions that tend to have been buried by the booze/drugs are a bit stronger in us. Sure they warn you about them, what they didn't know, what i didn't know, these new emotions weren't normal. So I guess by this last paragraph, what I'm saying is, there are more then a few of us that would be happy to at least point out what worked for us. You really can't do anymore then that. Change can only come from with in, but it's nice sometimes to get pointed in a direction that has worked for a few others. that you really aren't alone and yes, we do know what it's like and yes, sometimes the day by day isn't, it's damn second by second.

As far as apperances go, I still thank Cleaver for his insight to the Black Man. That they were being brainwashed by Mad Ave to think of beauty through the tv, ads, playboy, etc, White Man eyes. Well he woke them up and me along with it. If you wait for Mr Perfect or Miss Perfect to come along, man, you missed the good ones, if you're looking through capitalist eyes. Yeah, it isn't drink and drugs that can be addictions, there are many others. Hell I still have some. Don't mess with them, I'm done changing for the world. Time it went the other way.

Over the years I've been to a few NA and Al-Anon meetings. The NA meetings with relatives who were doing the program, and the Al-Anon in deep secrecy because I'd stopped drinking but my partner at the time had not. While not wishing to traduce the efforts of those who work these programs and get benefit from them, I myself found the 12-step structure a bit parochial, a bit confining. How ironic. I spend most of my adult life trying to avoid parochialism and confinement, and where do I end up? Stuck in a rigidly-defined monoculture which bores me witless, where my only release is to participate in forums like these.

Anyway. For many, a social drink is a life-affirming thing. For me, staying the hell away from drink is a life-affirming thing. And when you've been dependent on drinking for a long time, and much of your life is organised around drinking, trying to get untangled from it is like trying to get away from a many-tentacled sea creature.

So I salute anyone who sets out to do just that. You're right, postpaleo, every day without it is a victory.

oooh, NOT a good time to be entering the meat market, in that condition. it's like a "kick me" magnet. 8O

and there's way too many people out there willing to oblige.

who the hell is this benson guy, anyway?

 indeed.

I've seen them a few times - they seem to come to San Diego about every other year - perhaps only one in four years now. Saw them at the SDSU open-air ampitheatre in the late 80s - early 90s, and they put on a hell of a show. Saw them again in 96 or 97 at the sports arena (big barn of a place, horrible accoustics) and they were still rocking out. They played the del Mar Fair this summer, but the tix were like $250 each so we bowed out on trying to see them again.

Justin Hayward's voice has held up, and he can still write. Heard one last night with which I was not familiar - "Forever Autumn" - very good song, very sad. I think it's recent (relatively).

Well I'll be damned and most certianly have been many times over. It's CHUCK!!

So, I always thought they were just odd hats they were wearing. Now, I saw a comment they are upside down flower pots. If that's the case, wouldn't it be a case of perspective on which way was really up and what bloomed from the "pot"? And I had been thinking NIN had the industruial sound all worked out. Think they were listening to Devo a little. Korn dude was commenting else where about their influence as well.

Yo, Chuck, So good to see you back.

Leave the computer for just a few minutes to eat a spinach souffle and you never can predict what will be waiting for you when you return.

Where can I get one of those red hats? Do you think they come in tin foil?

CC, I'm sure my oldest son could figure out how to make one out of tin foil for you. He and his friends make tinfoil hats for their computers so that no one steals the artificial intelligent thoughts......or something like that. When I start to understand them I'll be worried. 8O

I think you could use those styrofoam circles that they use for wedding cake layers, and cut out the centers. Then you could use red foil or paper to cover them. And, yes, I am mentally bored enough today to sit and plan out a Devo hat! :D
