that and these are due in tomorrow. i have NO idea why they are so fascinating, but even as a little kid i could identify them by their engine sounds. there have been times they've flown over the house and woke me out of a dead sleep.
so, tomorrow (and most days this week) i'll go after work and sit on the hill overlooking where they are and wait for them to do their thing - they'll go over so close i can see the pilot's faces.

sigh. wish i had a spare $425 to buy a ticket. but i don't so i'll sit and watch and think about how if these, some of the last ones still flying, hadn't been flying almost 70 years ago i'd have been culled at birth and everyone else would be speaking german.
ya'll have a good week.

B-17K crew , England
Dad is lower right, they were in a Pathfinder group and did 25 missions, all returned safely. Dad was a waist gunner, armorer (armed the bombs).
The copilot went on to become a fighter ace in Korea, and was killed in a pot plane crash in Florida. I guess some never got the excitement out of themselves.
The few things Dad did tell me about the War weren't real pleasant and I had to ask, he never talked about it much.
My first time on a B-17 was when my cousin belonged to a war plane group. We did go up in a vintage WW2 trainer and flew over the lake house, he asked me if I wanted to steer the damn thing, guess what I said. Yup, get your freakin hands back on the stick, you idiot and stop laughing. I didn't go up in the 17 there or when they moved all the planes to Big Flats NY, which is about 45 minutes from here (National Warplane Museum). The one B-17 they have flying use to fly over the house all the time, but haven't seen it in a while. Not sure what they charge for a ride anymore, but Harris Hill is near as well and glider rides are or were reasonable. No engine noise, just the wind.

Liam, my son in the photo, can't stop looking at it. He wasn't actually invited into that photo. He snuck in and did that beautiful pose.

Postpaleo, loved the photo of your Dad.
At work, I run a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program for people with chronic lung disease (COPD - emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis etc etc). It's an outpatient program and participants come 2/week for 8 weeks.
In our last program 4 of the 14 particpants were Vietnam Vets and 2 had PTSD. We are starting another program and again we have 3 Vietnam Vets.
We're anticipating we will continue to have a few Vietnam Vets in every group - I'll need to start doing some research about their experiences.
Any Vietnam Vets in the Dino-Cafe? Any suggested reading?

lurking....

Spent all day trying to find a link for a new WPer from an article I read in the past week...I cleared my history and can't seem to find it and it was really interesting.
MRI seems to indicate that young autistics actually have "to many" neurons in their frontal lobe and they are so thick that they have problems getting t the right connections, like a traffic jam. Many of those are pruned as we age and allow for more connections....thus, this is a developmental delay of sorts. It is theorized by ne individual that the over growth is induced by environemental stressors that benefit from the resulting "creativity" and other traits of the autistic brain. I'm not describing this well, which is why I was hoping to find the link to give the person.
Anyway...while looking I got lost in many other interesting articles, as usual....(it was 10am last time I looked and is now 6pm and my BF says...what about dinner? )
This got me thinking about an accident I had when I was about 16. I fell down while drinking and was knocked unconcious ad woke (naked) with a large bloody lump on my forhead...I am wondering if that has cause d some peoblems for me? So I was just checking out the left frontal lobe and found a lot of over lap in it's "damage" and AS....hummmm
Off to slay a bison for the old man to eat, bbl

To follow up on the Vietnam era thing and post Vietnam era group... (I've been trying to work this in for a while, but didn't feel right just blurting it out)
I have a thing in my blog here and else where about it and the on going problems and this goes for other Vets as well, at least in the States. I don't know about else where in the world, but maybe no one has bothered to look either. So you can hit my blog link here or this will take you to a site that concerns all Vets and anybody else that gives a rats behind about our little group. HCVets.com It is a link about hepatitis C and our rate of it. Now, any vets that think you didn't lead a bad life style and aren't at risk, think again. Do yourself a huge favor and look at this and then pass the link on to other vets, please. It is worth it to file a claim, if you do have it. By the way don't let them feed you the Agent Orange line if you do test positive. Although that shouldn't be ruled out if you got nailed with it too. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm filing an add on to my claim now. I'm sure I mentioned the fact that I have it and was in the test mentioned on this site, but if you didn't know, I do and it's fine.
My therapist canceled and my Doc canceled. I think he (Doc) might be gone (thank god) and I don't know about her, she's still too fresh for burn out, but they don't last long sometimes in the VA system.
I know of at least two Ladies in the Cafe regulars that were married/lived with, Vietnam Vets. Now, SwampBlossom and I have been "close" for a long time and I was married before and they didn't get it. It isn't spread like a cold. However it can be done, so a small bit of information, just in case.

how 'bout some movies?
I found oneAussie Vietnam war films but I have not seen it. Tom Jeffrey’s film of "The Odd Angry Shot." Some really good ones are Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy "Platoon" "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Heaven and Earth" Francis Ford Cappola's APOCALYPSE NOW "Full Metal Jacket" "Gardens of Stone" and
oh, here is the whole list. .. my first husband was in the 101st Airborne Division Airborne Ranger (lived his life on guts and danger!) and in VietNam from 1965 to 1968 went AWOL in Sigon and became a junkie, which he kicked when he got home in Upstate New York on straight Tequila. I met him in Berkeley, CA when he was running pot and acid to the distributers on the street there at the college. Good times, Good times. Anyway I always was welcome anytime the 'boys' got together and we all watched these movies, because it was good therapy for them and for me, cause I never went there, but it affected me in ways I am not even aware of.

Postie, when you blow the margins you tax my frontal lobe no end! All those little motor neurons just collide right into each other trying to read over and back and forth and back and forth. Try not to do that, eh?
Nice pic of your dad, though.

Interesting list, Merle. Personally, I would say "The Deer Hunter" and "Apocalypse Now Redux" are my favortes.
Unfortuneately, there has not been a good DVD release of "The Deer Hunter" in the states that I know of.

That's OK, Postie. I remember starting a tirade courtesy of my mother when I innocently asked "Who was Musolini, mama?" She could not believe that almost a decade later some guy that tried to take over the world wasn't known by a little girl. It has always taught me about the fleetingness of fame and conquest.

I don't have a clue what you mean by " when you blow the margins". Something to do with the way I write, I'm assuming?

He's a Vietnam Vet.
Vietnam Era Vet, there is a difference in the sense it includes all that were in the military during that war. Both those that went and those that fought else where. And don't worry if you don't understand that one about fighting else where. You had to be there.

There is also a book out about the Fort Dix riots. I've seen it, don't recall the exact title, never read it *giggle*, it was in our local library years and years ago. I didn't start them, honest, I was just there is all. It goes into the story of an Army in open revolt. They won't make a movie out of it though. You can't really understand the war unless you have a good grasp of the times. And to try and describe what was happening in the Army itself, well just like a war, words alone won't do it, you had to be there and see it all around you. Hell my unit went on "strike", it never made the papers. And on a personal level it went on constantly, hundreds of times a day. The draft ended, they didn't like us and wanted a professional Army and that, is where the danger is.

Postie, I think what Merle means is that when you put a photo into your post which is wider than the screen, the whole page changes in width to accommodate it. Then a scroll bar appears at the bottom of the page, and to view the right side of the page, and the text in everyone's posts, you have to scroll back and forth. Myself I don't mind that too much. And it was a good photo of your dad's squadron.
Today I visited the Aspie support group that syzygyish attends on Queensland's Gold Coast. He has redesigned his hug machine. I gave it a try, and it is indeed a great de-stressor. I've never been in one of those flotation tanks, the kind that are used for relaxation and sensory deprivation, but I imagine the experience would be similar. I hope syzygyish is able to patent his invention and make big bikkie$ from it!
Tomorrow Robyn and Jim are coming for a visit, yay!
