ooo, on my vacation. last night late i found roundtrip airfares that get us to the bay area at about the same cost as the gasoline, and a rental car for $100 for the week, unlimited miles. SO, yeah, now we CAN fit a lotta stuff in. we land in san jose on sunday morning and don't have to be back at the airport until the following saturday afternoon.

that works. :D

now we just gotta find places to stay, they're all booking up fast.

wheeeeee!

hey merle, shall i give yosemite sam your email address?

CC... I used to do the same thing as your grandson.....taking things and putting them together to make new things. I still love doing this...I'm glad your incouraging him in his art. I have read that one reason little boys can be so destructive is no one incourages them to create and I think all humans have that impulse.

Nan....I hope you get to see the redwoods....I much prefered it to my time in San Fran, (I could not believe the number of homeless people there 8O ...they had stacked out every doorway....I'm sure there are interesting sites there but the redwoods are really awe-inspiring to me.....we even drove through one. The air there is unbelievable and it was so fresh and cool to breath. Just touching those giants felt transforming....Haven't some of them been around for over 2,ooo years ? or am I getting my facts confused ? Anyway, I was 13 at the time and I still recall the feeling of touching the trees and petting the moss...amazing stuff.

Zonder...I love the room. People have always told me my "caves" make them crazy because they are so "cluttered" but I love the look of the "old timey" rooms with all the contrasting patterns and different types of furnishings and art/craft pieces. I just wish I could afford someone to "dust" all mine....I think that is why the "zen" style has become more popular in USA....(we hate to dust).

My solution is to never invite anyone over until after sunset - can't see the dust as easily then. I find something soothing in pattern - Zen seems a little cold.

About that check from Uncle Sugar...
I tried calling the 800 number, only to get a recording telling me that call volumes are high, and to try back later. Three times. I mailed my return in February. Can't understand how they can have no record of it.

Hartz - Don't call the refund number, no matter what the voice on the phone says. Call the regular IRS Info number and keep pushing buttons until you get a live person. That refund number is useless. - Nan

Thanks, Nan. Will do. I think it's alright, though, because when I e-filed, I got a notice saying that it had been declined, because I was already filed. So that proves that refund line is bogus.
Have a lovely and safe vacation! :)

I think I was pretty fast, considering I had to balance chocolate, chili and turnips while avoiding sugar overdoses, and adjusting for fern spore count, tide level in Tobermory, and the opossum population in Tennessee. But it's paid off. Now that I feel more blaanced, I can take short cuts in my commute.

I'd take the same sort of short-cuts, if I could.

We live in an old house, about 100 years old I think. We were young and stupid (stupider  :D ) and made so many mistakes thinking they were improvements. If only we had the sense then to leave the house as it was instead of trying to modernize. Ugh. We had all our windows replaced with modern thermo-pane windows. Duh. We actually had magnificent windows with transoms above each window. We could have put stained glass in the transoms. We put knotty pine in the living and dining rooms. Nice yes, but not period. We blocked (covered over) doorways that were useful and allowed more freedom of access. Duh! We were idiots. Ah, my dream is to restore it but that won't happen unless I hit the lottery or my husband turns into a clone of you.

My parents did a lot of modernizing when I was growing up - nailed shut pocket doors, ripped out original fireplace mantles etc. I got interested in history and then kept at them to restore instead of modernize. (I know they thought I was really annoying!) I always figure that people make the decisions that they do because it works for them at the time.

The house in the picture still had its original gaslight chandeliers and wall fixtures. The kitchen was the only thing that had been remodeled, and who wants to work in an 1880s kitchen?

I don't suggest that anyone get an old house to restore unless they are really handy or have mega-lottery amounts of cash! Your husband probably is able to enjoy things other than stripping woodwork!!

Z

And the funny thing about that is that it's only a matter of time before the house would have to be modernized again, and again, and again.

Well, we'll take the camera, of course. We're booked at the Bug (the old, trasmogrified Hippie place) near Yosemite for part of the week. No phones or tv there, but we'll be in Yosemite all day those days so we won't need phones or tvs. Just a shower and a place to crash for the nights. Am waiting on a callback from a place on the Lost Coast, up in the Redwoods. Looks perfect. Three days of no stress. Also no phones or tvs in the rooms, but they have coast access, the trees are near, and they've got a resident cat and a llama. Sounds good to me.

Not sure, but I think they said they had wireless internet, but we may not take the laptop - no reason to. SOOOO, if we take the laptop, we'll upload some pix. Otherwise, we'll be technology-less for a week.

Which, when you think about it, is not a bad thing.

This is gonna be SO nice. :D

Nan....The hardest thing about your trip is going to be to refrain from kissing the llama. They have the most kissable snouts of any beast, not sure about their breath, but I think as grass eaters it is probably pretty fresh. (I love me some llama kisses), when no one is looking...give it a big kiss from me

My solution has been, low lighting and moving every year but we have been here 5 years now...and two cats make a lot of "dust". I can understand the concept of Zen minimalism appeals to some, but it doesn't suite me any more then the sterile suburbs I grew up in.

I'd suspected you might like it - your avatar is very 19th century! Very Pickwick Paperish.

That site is great. I really like the sea creature motifs.
