Those are so comfortable. We can buy them here at swapmeets and, of course (logically) in the drug stores here. You can get a broomstick (I think that's what they call the skirts) for like $8 at the Walgreens down the street or a more "traditional" skirt (tiered) for about $15 in certain parts of town. Or, if one is industrious and wants to deal with TJ, one can take the trolley down to the border and walk over the bridge and buy an obscene amount of "peasant" clothing for the $120 that museum is asking. I would assume their profit at the museum is about $110 on that blouse, because the makers south of the border are only getting pennies for their work.

Lemme know if you need any Baja shirts, they're from $8-$10 here and are nice and comfy after they've been washed a bunch (caution to Aspies, don't plan on wearing a Baja shirt until it's been washed a lot or you are wearing other clothing between it and you. They tend to be stiff and scratchy).

Before the incredible A/C fiasco, I sent off to Costco online for a turntable thingy. My turntable and amp died a long time ago, and I've got like 500 vinyl records I can't listen to. Anyway, it came last night. Compact, has a plastic lid that comes down over it all to keep the cats off the lp and all. Hooks directly up to powered computer speakers or can plug into the computer USB port. Has a pre-amp built in. Comes with software to remove the pops and hisses, and to record to CD. I have only used it so far with the speakers, and damn, it sounds good! I got to listen to two LPs last night before crashing for the day, very good sound quality. It cost like $90! Worth it, worth it, worth it!

Will be transferring all that music to files as time permits. : )

Nan...sounds like a cool new toy....that is the type of thing that can turn into an obsession. When I got my ipod, I spent days down loading all my CDs into it and editing out the songs I liked, deleating the ones I didn't(that was the hardest part...because just because I don't like a song one day, I never know what I'll like the next ) It was fun listening to music that I hadn[t listened to in years, though.

Music...there are some songs that "reflect" a time of my life, that I have such strong feelings when I hear them. When I listen to songs from when I was in grade school and Jr High...they make me feel so lonely. It's weird because I seldom think of myself that way but when I hear the music it brings it all back....I avoid it. The punk music brings back the "angsty" teen and drinking days...I had to avoid it all together for the first 5 years after I got sober...felt like I might get sucked back into that "person". Now I can listen to it but it comes with so many negative images, I don't very often. I had many positive memories when I went to punk shows but it seems to trigger the negative ones,(I have heard our brain tends to record more negative then positive as sort of an internal defense system......."Warning,warning Will Robinson", kind of thing.


Luckily, there was tons of music that I didn't listen to when I was younger that I love now....like Bob Dylan or Cat Stevens. Now I can make positve association memories with music.


Lauri.....it sounds like you caught up to the speed of your life. I have often been amazed at how long I can block out grief of change, until I seem ready to deal with it. Sometimes it seems like it can take me years to experience something that others experience "when" it happens. I think I must have some deep closets that I store this stuff in and then eventually get around to a little "spring cleaning". For me, it was when I gave up my "identity" as a 20 year old punk-rock alcoholic cycnic. I just outgrew the costum but then felt lost because I hadn't had time to sew a new "identity".

Nannarob is right, I chose to go back and try on my childhood clothes. Not a pperfect fit but suprisingly comfortable compared to the one I had been wearing. I was no longer around anyone who could define me, to me. Not my parents or a spouse. I went back to the rocks, crafts, stuffed animals, biking, walking in woods...that I had given me life as a kid. I found it very liberating to reunite with the child I had been told was "to weird". We have a lot of fun together. The longer I stayed sober, the more parts of myself I reunited with and found some no longer fit and others still did. It wasn't just sobriety that helped with this though but that I stayed out of "guy relationships" that I had allowed define me for about 8 years before I found my current BF. BY then, I felt comfortable enough in my own skin to not let him define me....and he seems to like me for who I am...amazing feeling.

Oh, music used to be on be one of the obsessions. I would put a LP on and play the same side, for days. I used to be able to tell you which track a song was on what side of what album, and what came before and what came after it.... When I got a way to transfer them to tape, I made "mix" tapes all the time. The kid made her first "mix" tape, all by herself, at 3 years old. Did an excellent job of it, too. She used to dance to the Beatle's "Hey, Bulldog" and knew the words to the one that went "One, two, three, four, can I have a little more? Five, six, seveneightnine ten I love you" ("All together now"?) and used to sing along to it. She was rather musically precocious, and I have to think it was because she heard so much of it. I remember taking her to an "enrichment" class at the local university, where they were going to teach toddlers about music, and she was light-years ahead of them. She could clap out tempos and identify a waltz from a march beat by walking along with it. The other kids couldn't find the beat....

Wow, that was a long time ago. Wish I could go back and do it again, knowing what I know now.

Yeah on the memories. The one I listened to last night took me back to a particular place on a particular afternoon. The record had been playing at the time. I could remember what I was wearing, what it felt like to wear what I was wearing, the beads in the doorway, the blacklight posters, the incense curling up - the incense burner was brass. The musty smell of the carpet. The sounds of the voices of the people who were in the room.... sometimes old music will take me places much less pleasant, and I know to avoid it because it will pull me back to the bad times that were there when it was a part of the time. What's convenient is that if I'm in the mood to do so I can sort of program the trip, so to speak. An aural mental vacation through time.

On the Cat Stevens, I think I've got everything he ever released, prior to his recent return to recording. Once I get it cleaned up and in a sound file, be happy to send it along. Have a lot of Dylan, too.

Nan...that would be awesome. I only have a few of each and they are all on albums. I learned about Cat Stevens from one of my favorite movies in college..."Harold and Maude". I did buy a "thingy" that is supposed to convert albums and tapes onto computer but it is really complicated, (for me) and I only got around to loading one tape before I gave up. I plan on getting back to it...when time allows..... like when/if I ever retire, (more likely to end up working at MickyDs until I'm in my 80's...what social security?).


Maybe you could throw some Arlo Guthrie on there too? All I know of him is Alices Restuarnt but WOW...I swear if it weren't for Jewish musicians, the 60's-70's would have been dull.( I love old Simon and Garfunkel, too ) I would be happy to send you music but most of mine is "modern"....NIN, Greenday, Lots of female musicians and The Honey Dogs mixed with some oldies (50's-70's), I found from a MP3 DVD I found at the thrift store....1,000 of songs for free, some really rock.

son had 40/40 for his math test (for the 6th years before they go to secundary school, all schools gather for one exam, it's the same exam for the whole country, this was a test from the teacher for preparing for this)(yeah it's prob a little aspie)

he really needed some confidence
so that is settled

Sounds cool. Tell me, what do you have on those lps? What type of music? Any radio shows?

(If you have radio programs, I would love to hear them as long as their not the comedies)

When I was a tween and teen, my favorite albums(while everyone else listened to the Eagles), was Hair,Jesus Christ Superstar, That Was The Year That Was(Tom Lehar?), 2,ooo Year Old Man...I was such a nerd (I did like Rubberband Man though, I still think it rocks)

On the music. Sure, I have Arlo. I know "Harold and Maude" very well - there's a website you can go to that shows where all the locations are that they filmed it at, and what they look like today. (Beware, addictive). I saw "Harold and Maude" in a movie theatre in Midland, Texas, the year it came out. There were six people in the theatre. We had to drive all the way to that city because they wouldn't show it in our town because it was "subversive" - but, then, they also wouldn't show Zeferelli's "Romeo and Juliet" without cutting it heavily because it was "obscene."....



The music we have is all over the spectrum, and I have things as odd as the 1952 Deutschmeister Oom Pah Pah Band, William F. Buckley reading "Peter and the Wolf" and recorded famous radio speeches by FDR and Churchill during the war (including the "Fight on the Beaches" Churchhill speech and the "Day of Infamy" FDR speech). Also have some of the old radio dramas. A lot of late 60s, early 70s popular music of the time (Jefferson Airplane, Tull) then the "singer songwriter" stuff. Some light and some heavy classical. I hope they all still play, they've been crated up and hauled from place to place so often, and left in storage in the heat.

The kid owes me money, I'll have her do a database of what we have that still plays. She gets into making lists and sorting the records, so it'll be fun for her.

But some of those are still funny. That's why I have an excerpt from 2,000 year old man on my computer.

I think it's mixed in with my tons of Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, and other comedy stuff.
