I spent two months in Florida with the Odd Couple. My husband and his brother. My husband: Walter Matthau, my brother-in-law: Jack Lemon. They kept me in stitches. Most validating was when my brother-in-law, exasperated by his brother's tendency to hear what he wants to hear, would say: "Johnny, I did not say that. You're twisting my words again." My brother-in-law was an excellent cook and had total command of the kitchen. I love a man that can cook.

Good morning CC! I'm lucky to be married to a competent cook, otherwise mealtimes in our house would be even more disorganised than they already are. :)

Good morning Sleepy. Yes, you lucked out. My kids always loved it when I returned after being away for a few days for whatever reason, and they didn't have to eat Dad's burnt hotdogs any longer. In my next life time I'm going to "play dumb" in the kitchen.

I love my cooking!
I was a cook and chef and caterer in this life (so much for TA's prediction/observation that an Aspie can't organize a beer bust in a brewery!) and can cook what ever I care to.
My weekly food plan starts with making two or three dishes on the weekend ( this week it is braised short ribs, salad Nicoise and quiche with salmon flakes and white cheddar) and pairing them with green veg and spinach salad or steamed broccoli and shredded carrots. I keep economy cuts of fresh albacore tuna in the freezer and shrimps, too, to toss onto the George Foreman grill to make it a fresh dish. Sometimes I make a soup and I always have cooked brown rice in the fridge ready to zip into the micro. (By the way, the new ziploc STEAMER bags are fabulous for no fuss no muss steaming in the micro! I heartily recommend them)

I love my cooking, and though I keep it all low fat and low carb, it is scrumptious!

What concert venue does the trolley run by these days in SD,Nan? (When I left town, they were almost ready to open the line through Mission Valley to El Cajon. I was hoping to get to ride that one, but the underground station at the university kept causing delays...)

I ask because most of the venues I can think of offhand in Diego and environs are well clear of trolley lines, but also tend to be free of such things as outdoor telephones (generally smashed by punk wannabes - "look, I'm a criminal! I break public phones!" ). So maybe they can claim that one. Although I would have thought they could have tried texting the "hey, we're here" message while they were still outside, before going in to the concert. Maybe that's just me. :)

I wish me or my BF could orginize enough to cook. I found when I worked at the house for Dd guys, where I could create my own recipes and they provided the food...I actually liked cooking and the guys loved having something besides hotdogs and pizza they had been eating before I started cooking for them. I think it really helped that I was getting paid to do it. At home I would rather use my time for ....my stuff. We just eat a lot of junkfood dollar menue and chinese take out. As expensive as food has gotten, it doesn't cost that much more and less dishs.

Merle...did you ever consider using your cooking to make your own business...going into peoples homes and teaching them to cook healthy yummy food?

I am "business challenged" myself but I do think there is a market for this. There is a whole generation of little girls who did not get to learn to cook from their moms because mom had to go work 60 hours. My mom was not a great cook but I did learn a few things from her and it was a nice alternative to my usual cheese on a bagel or Ramon noodle diet.

Maybe one day, there will be small business loans offered to adults with AS, like there are for some women and minority groups. First we have to convince them we are alive  (and trying our damndest to stay that way).

Why don't you share your recipe for short-ribs, Merle. Last time I had them was in the diner where I worked and they were wonderful. Never thought of making them myself. Could look it up, but I like to have recipes of people I know and then I can refer to them as Merle's short-ribs. I already have Aunt Tony's chicken, Claire's Vinegar Chicken, Jo-Jo's Sauer Kraut, Georgianna's Baked Beans, and so many more.

I would share my own recipe for short ribs, but as one of the crucial steps involves going down to Flaming Dave's Bar-B-Q Pit, I don't think it's going to be all that helpful...

Oh, BTW, Merle, thanks for the link to the vegetarian myths you provided earlier. I know some people who are going to get such an earful of statistics and biohistorical data the next time they try to proselytize in the middle of my steak!

hi deacon. yeah, orange line goes down "C" street in downtown before it curves around and runs south to the border. runs right by "house of blues". and yeah, they sure could have, couldn't they.

the greenline (the one you were waiting for) is nice. new, efficient, fast. it runs all the way from santee to old town, through mission valley.

the orange line trolley stop near our place is under construction, so i had to leave them down a ways and they had to walk down through what amounts to a construction site to get to the platform. i couldn't see 'em, there was no place to park and wait to make sure they got on the trolley. there's been a lot of punch-and-grab assaults along the lines in the last few months, people are getting pressed for cash so those with a tendency to do so have now started stealing from others. they've been working in small groups, targeting all sorts of people at all times of the day. they hit someone about my age last week at our stop, at 5pm. she was on her way home from work, they followed her off the train, jumped her in the parking lot, stole her purse and broke a few ribs. the orange also goes through the funkier parts of gangland on the way to downtown. not my idea of a good idea for them to be riding, but it was early enough in the day and they were together, and they wouldn't accept a ride down. i refused to let them ride back at midnight, they're both clueless.

and i'm still pissed off. they know better.

Nan...I'm sorry you had to go through all this stress....sometimes it is not good to be a visualizer. I thought I was untouchable when I was a kid...hitch hiking, walking around at 3am, meeting up with guys I did not know ecause they seemed nice, living in abandoned houses. It would seem like I did have a guardian angle to protect me(the stuipid, drunk and vulnerable), but then I would have to ask the very uncomfortable question...why doesn't everybody who is vulnerable didn't they also deserve to be protected. (part of my "not understanding" about karma...good people get hurt all the time).

Anyway, I just want to say that I'm sorry and glad she is safe. I know there were times I got in trouble from just not thinking of the possibility(that would appear obvious to everyone else), that I might not be abe to use my cell/text phone in a club...or that I could have stepped out side to try or...somemthing else simple that just escaped my mind because I had already worked it out that it was going to go "my way". Not an excuse mom...just an explaination...maybe?

I can see why you wanted to sell your house and move away, Nan! That sounds horrible, especially about the gangs. My brother lives in a major city in NJ, and tells me about gang related incidents around there all the time. Since I grew up in that city, I am so glad not to live there any more.

Your experiences remind me so much of my daughter, krex. The torturous worry she put me through, when in her teens, and the continuing worry she puts me through now, is why I started going gray in my thirties.
