Hey! I claim first dibs on the pickled herring!

This place is bigger than I thought. I hadn't noticed the pond, or the oak tree. Are they down in the ha-ha?

I'm trying to decide if I'm getting more sensitive to bright lights, or if I just used to be in denial about how much I hated sunlight. Downside is, it's possible that J will be transferred to an Army base in Arizona, in which case I suppose I'll just have to get really dark glasses, and spend most of my time indoors. Not that this is a bad thing... :)

Positive thoughts? Well, it's only five more months until the November general elections in the US, which means in seven and a half months the Bush administration will be history. Our long national nightmare will be over!

The pickled herring???? OK, who dumped vinegar in the herring pond??

And how long can the herring float there in the brine before the stench drives everyone away??

Be warned.... NO HANGING HERRING ON MY OAK TREE!

They might be down in the ha-ha??? (mumbles Blessedmom, not sure what or whom a ha-ha may be)

Arizona...... I won't envy you the sunlight or the heat. 8O

That is definitely a positive thought. :D

And speaking of positive thoughts and reasons to celebrate, I do believe that Chuck has a birthday coming up on June 11 and ..........((whispers))..... he's turning 50! But I didn't say that.....

you wish. it's the party that's in control that really pulls the strings. the puppet out in front... well, he's a puppet. it's the room full of custom-tailored suits behind him you gotta worry about.

arizona. ohdamn. fort hoo-chak-kha? wah-chook-kah? (whatever) i hope not. really. omg. 8O if it's in the mountains it might not be so bad. can't think of any place in the mountains there that has an army base. all i can think of is fort 110F in the shade all summer hoochakkah. invest in a swamp cooler when you get there. it works well when there's low humidity (and especially when there's no humidity). and buy saline spray and eye drops by the gallon. invest in a really good pair of polarized, wrap-around sunshades.

on the good side, it's lovely there in the summer after dark. just lovely.

I was about to say that there was no way the American public would be dumb enough to elect McCain after everything he's said and done over the past few years - and then I remembered that there are people who actually think that even talking to the leaders of certain nations is equivalent to Neville Chamberlain's giving parts of Poland to the Third Reich. I don't think they even know what Chamberlain did - they've just seized on "appeasement" and "Chamberlain", and want to milk the meme for all it's worth without even finding out what it means.

So maybe he does stand a chance, especially if Clinton somehow manages to steal the Democratic nomination. :(

I tried smoking some herring once, but I couldn't keep the little buggers lit...

A recipe for Drunken fish.

I think the restaurant I used to have this in probably substituted the sherry with some...
Mei Kuei Lu ChiewImageAKA Mai Kwai Luk.

or even Mei Gui Lu jiu (another recipe)

unless you are buying miso as the second listing, I would like to talk to your son about what 'fermented' means!

The first is Soy sauce and the "extracted juice" soy milk, which I believe is made by cooking the beans down to a paste. I see Mom prescribed research in his future.

And yes, Nan, he is a good cook. He is also an Aspie with a perseveration that involves Japan which means that, left to his choice, we would be eating a lot of sushi and tempura.
