The Dino-Aspie Ex-Café (for Those 40+... or feeling creaky)
I think a major factor is being mutually aware of where problems may lie.
Body language... Knowing that verbal communication is going to work, and any other stuff (body language, eye contact, etc) will be irrelevant.
Small talk... I'd just as soon stop speaking and leave a gap.
Interests... I'm interested in everything... that matters. You can rely on me NOT to talk about sport, politics, religion, cars, soaps or celebrities. That is unless, in each case, it is to argue vaguely against them.
If I say something wildly unconventional, an Aspie will listen and try to understand. An NT will think I'm joking (this has happened many times, recently).
We are a literal bunch. We mean what we say. I'm still not fully used to this. It's nice.
It's 2.36am here, and my brain went to sleep a few minutes ago. I'll may try to elaborate tomorrow.

Nan, it just dawned on me that your avie is an actual historical personage, and I was thinking, "Boadicea? Nah, it's Jeanne d'Arc. Boadicea wouldn't be wearing quite so many clothes."
Number Two Son cracked me up this morning when he came charging into my bedroom with his hoodie bunched up around his face, doing a very credible Kenny-from-South-Park impression. The nickname "Number Two Son" is apropos for more than one reason; I love him to bits, but he can be a little sh*te sometimes.

Ahh.. Here's a paint brush covered in hair - two types of hair. Could it be Lau's hair, and Postpaleo's?
I saw someone shuffle past me earlier. It was Helen on her way back to bed. She's been on another planet.
..................
Lau, why do you find it more relaxing to be with other aspies? Is it because of neutral body language? Or the lack of small talk? Or only engaging if your interests are sparked?

Well, I'm off to report you all to the Ministry of Conformity. It hurts me as much as it hurts you, but we must keep out society bland. We can't have paranoria and madness seething in the masses, bubbling up. God no! Ta ta

If rubbish must be spoken here, please speak it fluently!
Hello and welcome richie!
Now where is my keyboard?
Hummm, errr, no, I didn't say I was asleep, you were asleep. Never heard the song by Cheap Trick called the Dream Police? Well I don't like the police all that much, I'd rather go along the lines of the Dreams Release. Hide hell, it's my wife that does that stuff, blame it on SwampBlossom, it's all her fault and she knows it because I tell her so. She just beleieves every word that comes out of my mouth. I'm just sure of it.

I have a bottle of vodka in the cupboard that I use for making acne-control soap for my sons. It calls my name at least once a week but I am certain that if I have just one drink, I may never, ever stop.

Our problem, as I see it, is that we are spread so thinly across the planet, that a place like WP is the only way we get to meet. Then there are all the horror stories about meeting people in real life, whom you have only exchanged a few lines of typed text with.
In here, Quatermass, Sleepydragon and nannarob had their meet on one side of the planet, Lemon, daughter and I have met on this side. (Hm. Both meets included an experienced NT chaperone, I guess... make of that what you will?)
Maybe we should do this more often? It could be interesting to at least be able to say I've met someone who'd met someone who'd met Postie.
Rambling thoughts stop here. Discuss. Credits will be awarded for depth of insight and breadth of breath.
OOOOO a plan. Can I help? Can we blow up earth?
Great post lau, I snipped some for this. I'll award you 5 space bucks out of a top cash award of 5 (so I'm a cheap skate, can't help it). Try not to spend it all in one place. I have a bridge for sale however.
Had a very rewarding meeting this evening, we'd talked here and through instant messanger a little before. This time we were actually online at the same time, had the same program up and running and the computer gods were kind. I heard Merles voice. I got goose bumps of the third kind. It was wonderful. We laughed, giggled, acidently made noises that bothered the other (apparently my coffee mug hitting the tile I use for a coaster comes through the cam mic loudly), things that ya just can't do through this printed thing we do here. Well, we did manage to have a few Aspie moments and I can do that very well here too. I think I still have a glow from the experiance. I most certianly have a smile on my face as I think about it, to write it here. I can very well see why she was very good at a past profession. Most soothing, wonderful inflection in her voice as I was picking apart the different accents in it, wonderful blend. I did have to turn off the video on my web cam, both to spare her and to spare myself, I don't do mirrors. Most likely the closest we'll ever get to each other physicaly since Woodstock. I have no doubt what so ever we passed close to each other. It was ment to be.
Naw you don't wanna meet Postie in the flesh, he'd make yours crawl. Trust me, I actually have met the guy.

Cosmiccat, thank you so much for your words. You are the one who reaches across cyberspace to me.
I've been thinking about my boys when they come to visit one at a time. Aussieboy is demanding sometimes, but Ubby3 is so easy to be around. He does his own thing and I can switch off and attend to my own concerns for long periods of time.
I am analysing my social interactions. I am only comfortable in small groups. But I am nearly always 'twitchy', always aware of the others. I am attuned to their needs but also to whether they are happy, whether I'm letting them down, etc. And there is often a bit of guilt that I didn't make more of an effort. And I have to try not to fuss.
I have antennae that swivel around, searching out feelings.
In my small group at scrapbooking I am loud, funny and always saying the wrong thing. At tepin bowling I'm the same. So I am a bit worn out.
Since I've been aware of aspergers I make an effort to be neutral when I first see the boys. I am more neutral when I shop too.
I have just come to the conclusion that there are at least two NT interactions:
#look at me being good, smart, or whatever
#look at me - am I good enough? Can you give me affirmation, pat me on the head etc
Any comments?

We have built a community here, haven't we? An aspie type community is a wonderful place, warm and gentle and non judgmental.
And to those who don't post often, we embrace you too, though we won't physically touch you. Well, I might!. There are no cliques here. Come and sit by the fire and Chuck will melt marshmellows for you. I forgot - it's summer where you are. Chuck will give you fruity ice blocks.

I honestly think that both of those are true for Aspies and NT's to an extent. I think the need to be validated and supported is universal, maybe NT's need it a little more than Aspies but all human beings need to feel that someone is hearing them when things are tough or they are feeling self-depracating.
The same holds true for being noticed for our strengths. A little praise and recognition go along way. And of course, that is something that also lessens with age for most people, unless they didn't have it when they were young. Those people seem to have a constant need for affirmation and praise, but I don't see it as malicious as much a sub-conscious effort to fill that hole in their psyche.

No, sorry, you were right on the first try. It was like winter or something.

He decided to get out of Kenny mode when I got out the camera. Sometimes he's a Shi'ite, sometimes he's a Sunni, and most of the time he'd rather not have his photo taken.
You ARE Boadicea! Go me!!
From another post of mine last June:
Not only am I too weird to be in any clique, but sometimes I wonder if you lot will kick me out of the Dinosaurs' Cave for excessive... err... youthfulness.
UUMMMM, Sleepydragon, have you looked around here lately. I don't think excessive youthfullness is much of an issue!
Anyone over 30 who can use "pwned" in a sentence and still be cool is a friend of mine. ![]()
