Having no stocks, I don't really have a dog in this fight - but I do have vague memories back at the beginning of the tech bubble, when the Dow went above 6000 for the first time, and Greenspan invented the phrase "irrational exuberance". Is it possible that this isn't so much a "collapse" as a correction to a sustainable level?

The only stocks I hold are in my 401K plan, so losses only exist on paper but soon the belt tightening is
going to start if I don't want to use up my other reserves....

I was chatting with a co worker and she just blabbed on and on (as they will) about how much she lost in her 401-K (a lot! I was shocked) and I sat down later and did some math (don't laugh, I know a little math) to find out all those years I just couldn't get it together and wasn't working and living on canned goods and 2 week old bread from the church free pantry had I been working and stashing it away like a good girl, I would have almost the same amount in my 401-K as I do now.

who knows, we probably will all be OK in the long run?

yeah, ironic isn't it. working three jobs... well, whatever.

we could get run over by a bus at lunchtime and then it'd all be a moot point, wouldn't it? i just want to make sure the kid has enough by the time i do check out (whenever that is) that she will not be just thrown out to the wolves. been there, done that, don't want it for her.

Lelia walks in and plops into the nearest chair and begins a typical AS monologue, not noticing if anybody is paying attention or not.

I should be in the haven I suppose but this is where the people I know are. And they make me laugh. I'm not laughing today and won't, but maybe tomorrow I will. Right now I'm sad.
My 27 yr old son, a sweetheart and all around nice guy with AS has just been diagnosed with another AS-- Ankylosing Spondylitis. Yeah, autoimmune difficulties abound on my side of the family with arthritis for all and Sjogren's for my mother, and I had lupus for several years and now don't so doctors now say I never did so either I was healed or somebody made a big mistake when my kidneys failed, but I still have allergies and arthritis and gluten knocks me out and casein gives me a sore throat and so on. Yeah, Too Much Information. Sorry.
And so now this ghastly thing has landed on my son. He hasn't found a wife yet, and he desperately needs a wife to take care of him. I drove up to Kirkland and fed him and bought a huge heating pad for him. He's too depressed and in too much pain and too exhausted to work on what he must to cope with the disease. He feels bad that his production has dropped at the game company he programs for. The bosses seem sympathetic and concerned. He still needs to see a rheumatologist now and is waiting on his insurance to cover the medication he will need, maybe, because it works for only 60% of the patients who try it.
My son has never been able to talk about his interior life. I get the feeling that he is deathly afraid to say what he is feeling and thinking right now. My husband and I might go up again this next weekend, but I'm betting our son will be out LARPing somewhere.
So, where are the magic muffins?

Lelia. For a few years, I was privileged to know, as a friend, a person with advanced Ankylosing Spondylitis. He was one of the funniest people I've ever met.

Sorry to hear about your boy's illness, Lelia — and don't they always revert, in your mind, to the children they used to be at times like these? Glad he can still LARP. Best wishes for his recovery.

Here are some magic muffins, Leila. I couldn't help but overhear. I was not lucky enough to raise my daughter, but I might know how you must feel - to love someone so much and only able to do so much - because its all up to how the universe unfolds.

have a couple of muffins, you need your strength.

If it isn't snarks, it's pookas, and that's all I have to say about that. 8O

it must be really cool to have a mum who can be there once in a while when you need it,
talking is not always necessary, but someone who cares is so nice
i remember when my mum was still alive and she came with cake and self made bread and a knitted pullover for the kids

Pookas are so much nicer than snarks. And magic muffins and friends are nicest of all.
The daffodils are blooming their brightest yellow right now. And the cyclamens shine bright pink. No boojums though. Too cold.

sun is shining way too brightly in the window onto the birds, most of whom are busy fluttering in their respective bowls of fresh water or sitting, bedraggled, on their perches trying to dry off (and throwing off droplets of water that go everywhere within a four-foot radius of their cages)... spike has been in a mood, did not want to settle last night. laid another egg this morning, is a bit cranky and territorial about his cage. got upset because i cleaned it out, egg and all, as it was badly in need of a going over. is now sitting, soggy, on his perch in the sun giving me the "talk to the back, nan, talk to the back, you ain't talking to me, noooo" treatment.

the kid seems to have come into my room at some time last night and fallen alseep on my bed as she was there when i woke up and she's still semi-snoring there now.

have to do tons of laundry, happy the washer and dryer still work. guy is coming sometime between noon and four to replace my car windshield. had a chip in it a year or two ago that slowly evolved into a crack that would do the san andreas proud. last week another rock hit and another crack started. they've been moving towards each other daily, like some weird old scifi movie, so i thought i'd better go ahead and get it replaced. emailed three places off the better business bureau website, only one is still in business ( 8O ) so i made arrangements for them to come replace it. they quoted me half the price i was quoted last year at this time. hope it's not a crappy glass, but i have to take the car to be inspected/smogged tomorrow so it's best to have some kind of glass in there that doesn't look like it will shatter if a bug hits it....

ooh, our public library stocks doctor who videos. on dvd. how ...convenient... that we have a dvd burner.

wish it was just a bit less sunny, but i guess it's good for the birds.

Nanarob is on the Sunshine coast, right BELOW where it will hit. Lets hope it is far enough away for her to not be evacuated!
