we just had something nice happen. a small snack shop has just been built nearby, and they officially open for business tomorrow. today they are having a "practice" opening so their staff can work and get ready. they just came through our building and invited us all for free food. had a very nice grilled portobello mushroom and cheese sandwich. can't believe i turned down a free dessert and soda!! going to be nice having a snack shop nearby at work - won't have to walk a mile to get lunch anymore, assuming we have enough time to walk for lunch in the first place. :D

yes on the names! my daughter's friends have some pretty strange names - there are a lot of girls with last names for first names here, and then there are the "ethnic" names. never run across xian before, but lots of l'tosha, laquinta, l'donna, shaniqua, etc.

And I've never really been clear what ethnicity is supposed to be represented by those names - they're not European (although they do seem to be French-influenced), they're not Swahili or !Xhosa or anything like that, they're not Hindi or Native American or Chinese - what are they????

I mean, sure, our kids have "ethnic" names - because H wanted to honor their Welsh and Scottish ancestries. That's why they're named Morgana Maeve and Iain Thomas (although Iain's middle name is also his father's middle name).

Xylia is greek meaning 'Of the Woods' and there is one Xyia that has a blog on facebox but it wasn't a definion (like how to pronounce them!)

I had to look that one up!

congratulations on the creativeness of your children, lelia. I have friends my age that named their daughters China and India and Eulalie. :D And their kids named their kids Cayanne and Quinoa - pronounced Quin-noah because they didn't know the grain is prounced "Keen -wah"

congratulations on the progeny, lelia.

saw that grain in the grocery for the first time today, merle. is it any good?

oh, this is nice. it has cooled off enough for us to go clean out our cars, stock them for an emergency "gotta run", and do so without having to rush. there is smoke in the air, i think somewhere north of us is on fire, but nothing threatening. it's nicer to have time to get the junk out of the car ahead of time.... i forgot i had some of that stuff in the trunk!

no, not as the crow flies. you forgot to mention that after he killed community activist in 1987, believing she was a witch, he burned a sacrifice of a deer carcass in the woods to worship his deity. There are a lot of woods between here and there.

and Quinoa was banned by the Spanish conquistadores to the vanquished local peoples of Peru because it was known to be so nourishing. It is a gluten free grain-like seed that is safe for those with gluten intolerance or anyone who follows a celiac diet.

Not to mention that to get from Spokane to anywhere this side of the Cascade Mountains, Paul would have to cross a fair stretch of desert, starting off in a state with very high firearms-possession statistics. He'll be fortunate indeed if he's caught by the authorities before he's found by a private citizen.

Nan, I did see the update on this morning's news - looks like what you're smelling is the fire in the Cleveland National "Forest", up near Temecula, so I don't think the actual fire part will be reaching you from there - it'd have to burn down Escondido first, possibly causing several million dollars in property improvements...

hi deacon. ah - he's on the OTHER end from youse guys. good. (if there is a good.)

yeah, it's up by temecula, went from 20 acres to 250 in one hour, could see the smoke and we're quite a ways away. don't think it'll come this way - my guess is that they were all over it with the water tankers and it's probably at least not spreading by now.

urban renewal for escondiddly, yeah. it would be an improvement.

was still nice to have a cool evening to clean out the trunk. actually found two umbrellas i didn't realize i owned - haven't used them in years. i have a tendency to collect "stuff" in the trunk during the year. have now got a nice plastic tote ala target and have put all the loose cans of cat food, the bleach wipes, the armor-all, string, extra laundry soap, and misc in the tote so i can easily slip in whatever else i fancy to take with us if it gets bad again this year. it's about to be very hot and very dry, and they can't seem to make up their minds if we're going to have wind or not. if no wind, much less danger.

ah, fall. on the good side, if we make it to halloween, we're probably good for the year. :)

They found him, he was surrounded and surrendered from the woods around Goldendale

Since I was in Spokane yesterday and today, I read a lot of headlines about that guy. Every family that went to the fair that day is absolutely outraged. And after reading his history up to the day of escape, I do not blame them. Many heads shall be rolling over the next few weeks.

I was in Spokane because teeny Xian got teenier when he dehydrated to the point of unconciousness. He couldn't stay awake long enough to eat enough to keep him going. So to ICU he went and the hospital rehydrated him and he is regaining his weight and bilirubin is going down. Still can't regulate his temperature. The typical problems preemies have. I love watching my son in love with his son.

On the drive back to Vancouver, we got to see lots of random spots of burnt ground. Every fall the tumbleweeds catch on fire and roll along to spread it. The country around Spokane is so beautiful, but it is always burning. I'm glad to be back on the wetter side of Washington.

The killer got as far as Goldendale?! !! I hope there's not a ditched car somewhere with a dead driver in it.

oh thank goodness.
i hope lelia's thought isn't a "real" one.
yeah, why exactly was a criminally insane homicidal maniac taken for a day outing to a fair????

we had a beautiful sunset here tonight. very thin sliver of a moon low on the horizon, very pumpkiny orange band of sky (from the smoke) after the sun set. fading into various hues of purple. really striking.

supposedly when medicated for his schizophrenia he is not homicidal. By the way, he does have a MySpace page where he shows his videos of his band called "Philly Willy and the Hillbillies".
