Hmmm.

I made a few inquiries, but don't expect to hear anything until tomorrow, which may be too late for your circumstances. If anything comes through, I'll patch it along to you.

Yeah, I tried to rent a car for the kid long distance once. No dice.

Our good news (if it holds) is that, miraculously, all of the kid's tests were approved (well, the samples will be taken, anyway) and all samples are to be taken Wednesday.

Did they finally figure out that the sweat glands do not in fact connect to the bloodstream at any point (despite the expression "sweating blood")?

Edited to add:
Well, she's in the air now, it would seem. Let's just hope everything else works out as well...

Fingers are crossed for H, Deacon. I have had absolutely no response to any of my inquiries. The kid used to have a friend in Vegas, but she just moved home to live with her mother so our one link there is gone. At least it's a bit cooler there than it has been.

On the tests - Apparently. Once I sent them the "kiddie lite" version webpage they were able to coordinate it almost instantly. We've got our fingers crossed now, as if they can get sweat out of her it might be possible for there to be a medication that would do the same, which would mean a WORLD of difference to her. She's been having to live like a prisoner whenever it gets over about 80F outside (or inside!) all her life. If no sweat happens, then we know pretty much what it is - at least, that part of it. The DNA stuff won't be back for months, and all it could possibly tell us is 1) wrong guess, sorry, start over; 2) it should stay about the same; or, 3) prepare.

At this point, we both just want to know one way or the other, what the hell it is that's going on with the poor kid.

Big earthquake in American Samoa, 8.3, had a warning all over the Pacific. We have warnings here for our coast to stay off the sand. Big tsunami wave hit a town on the coast about 20 years ago and believe me, they take it very seriously over there.

Were you wishing for water, Nannerl? Careful what you wish for, and next time, make it NON salt water.

Here's hoping the best for H and J, and of course, Dad.

Merle

The Jesusita Fire in Santa Barbara, CA, last week caused these two to take shelter together. The fawn is 3 days old and the bobcat about 3 weeks. The fawn came from somewhere in the fire and the bobcat from Carpenteria. They immediately bonded and snuggled together under a desk in the Santa Barbara County Dispatch Office for several hours.

The bobcat kitten was rescued near Arnold Schwarzenegger's ranch, where it was dehydrated and near death.
They rescued the fawn during last week's wildfire. Although wild animals, especially of separate species, are never placed together due to regulations, in this emergency situation, they had no choice. During the mayhem of the fire, they were forced to put animals anywhere they could, since they had run out of crates large enough for the fawn. The kitten ran to the fawn, and it was instant bonding.

that's such a cool photo, merle. :)

hey, it's like 65F outside, with sheet lightening to the south. (???) wind is coming from everywhere at once. no rain. this is strange. you weren't kidding with the "wait until after the 29th", things are going to change. woooo, tsunamis, sheet lightening (no rain, but no ground-to-cloud strikes either, which is really a good thing), and generic systemic weirdness. spike is sitting in his cage, fluffed up and muttering (clicking, actually, which is his version of muttering) and does not want to come out, which is very odd indeed.

well shuckey darns, this is just turning out to be one strange month, you know? read up on the samoa quake, that's very, very sad. lots of samoans in town, pix of them on the tv not being able to get through to their families by phone. much worry. :(

Yes, thank the Maker, J was due to arrive in Vegas later that morning, and he called me from a pay phone that would take incoming calls, so I managed to coordinate their eventual meeting. I gather he was able to talk someone into giving them a ride; now he's apparently arguing with AER himself, in order to arrange the rental vehicle they so desperately need.

Sorry I didn't update, but it looks like we've been unknowingly playing Hot Potato with what seems likely to be an H1N1 infection. As advertised, it's really no worse than seasonal flu; it's just that since it's a new mutation, we have absolutely no resistance to it. So Morgana missed two days of school earlier this week, and came home early today with a cough and fever; and the moment I got back from the airport, I fell onto the couch, and spent the next 24 hours or so randomly passing in and out of consciousness. (Fortunately, Iain's not in school on Wednesdays...) I'm still tired and somewhat sore, but at least I can get around. I just hope I don't relapse like poor 'Gana.

I don't know why it seems to be passing Iain by, I just hope it keeps doing so!

Now if you'll pardon me, Iain's insisting that it's story time, and hitting me with "Goodnight Moon"...

When you are scared and alone, you are scared and alone.

Comfort and security will be taken however they come.

Poor guys are so cute.

Well, a bit of relief, in a manner of speaking - J's dad finally died last night, so that makes things much clearer for them. Now they just have to help his mom through this, and work out how to get back to the airport on the 14th (which actually shouldn't be a problem - military payday is the 15th, but since they also use a Federally-sponsored bank, J's pay is actually released to them a day early, so they should be able to afford a car).

I was finally able to slip out last night and get 'Gana some flu medication, which seems to be helping, and the whole thing is just passing Iain by, thanks be! Now I just need to get the pee smell out of the couch before H gets home ('Gana fell asleep early last night on the couch, and had a bit of an accident), try some more to get the puppy, Plex, to poop on the paper rather than next to it, and clean up the horrid mess that overtook this joint in the few days that I was incapacitated... 8O

The fawn and bobcat are just so cute! Just make sure they're separated before they get old enough for instinct to take over once again...

my condolences, deacon.

but at least now you know for sure, and it's more concrete plans to be made.

pee smell. hmmm, baking soda mixed with water? or something with enzymes. i seem to remember there was a laundry soap (biz?) that had "enzymes" in it that saved our backsides on rented furniture once or twice, when the kid was small.

they're practicing for the MCAS air show today. lots of "whoomps" of gasoline bombs and lots of jets screaming overhead. 8O

VINEGAR, SALT AND WATER SOLUTION WILL DO

Use one and half cup of white Vinegar and 1/4 cup of salt mixed in a bowl of water. Soak in a light coloured absorbent material or mild sponge and scrub from the surface, allow to penetrate inwards depending on the magnitude of the urine. Then dry couch

Vinegar is an antibiotic
useful for stain removal
removes offensive odour
It leaves a sweet smell

Salt is also an antibiotic

This might be the most economical, effective and handy

sorry about J's dad. :(
