Sometimes I sense that among many NT people, it's almost... a faux pas to get onto topics that are too 'heavy'.
I think it is... I tend to make friends who are a bit 'deeper' than the majority of NTs, because I'm so used to my Aspie partner's level of conversation.
He had a job once working in Admin for a ferry company. He didn't fit in because he hadn't watched the soap operas or the football, and he wasn't interested in gossip. He streamlined some of the systems because they didn't make sense the way they'd always been done. He was too smart for them and they hated it.
In the canteen at lunchtime he happened to sit with the engineers who designed the ships. He could hold his own in conversation with them, and they were shocked that he only worked in admin. They asked him what his background was, where he'd studied etc.
He got into email conversations with the Managing Director, who liked some of his ideas & suggestions.
His colleagues made him so uncomfortable and miserable he had to quit
